If they end up with a pick #15 or later, I have a feeling the target would be Byron Murphy, Jr.

This is a top heavy draft.
We will be lucky to find someone in round 4 and beyond who can give us any quality snaps.
      We play modern Harball.

Sounds like a good reason to trade down for picks...BEFORE round 4...

I mostly agree with you, but think it's possible to land a useful blocking TE, a RB or a FB in Round 4, and in this draft, maybe WR, too.

You have to remind yourself that this won't be a Tom Telesco draft.

Also, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that they draft a punter on Day 3. If they could find a hang-time specialist with better distance than J.K. Scott, it would be a quality addition.

I was a little bit disappointed in watching Frazier.

i am not too well versed on this draft class after the first round (i never am), but round 4 always starts to fall off - even though great starters are still found there. if you look at the draft point charts (on walter footaball, etc.), the point value really drops after round 3. I never studied the tables much until this year, and really noticed the drop off in round 4.

                      chargers' values for 2024:

                      1 round (pick 5): 1,700 points
                      2n rd (pick 37): 530
                      3rd rd: 245
                      4th rd: 82
                      5th rd: 36.5

Note: these tables are built on probability over many drafts. they are not based on Tom Brady and Brock Purdy.

I think we have a lot of work to do along the defense... that's why I prefer the extra picks.

If we can't find a trade partner, and must stay @#5... I think OT Joe Alt would be better value than Bowers.
Harbaugh said that protecting Justin Herbert is priority #1. Joe Alt does that... and allows for a better run game, too.
We will run the ball more/better with Harbaugh/Roman. Ironically, Herbert's best year was the year we ran the ball better.

Edit: BTW, Jared Cook was the TE that year. It was his last year. So, I don't believe you need an elite TE to improve your team or get you to a Super Bowl.
You don't have to have an elite TE, but you have to work really hard to get that "extra" offensive production. Defenses are designed to stop the outside WR. You can move 1 of them around to the slot, but defenses can adjust pretty easily.

You can additional production from pass-catching RB, 3rd WR or TE. In Roman's (and most NFL) offenses RB are checkdown or swing guys. They are a fallback option when the rest of the play isn't open. You get something when nothing else is there. Roman and Harbaugh are not going to be putting a ton of time into a 3rd WR. That leaves the TE position. And most TE are like the average RB, a checkdown option. They aren't challenging a D downfield, they are getting some production that the D allows you to have.

A few RB like Ekeler can attack downfield. A few TE can do that too. But MOST of them are not really much of a threat.

TE is a tough position to get a good player, because of the blocking and catching. Remember that Kelce came out of college as mostly a blocker, and while he learned to be a great receiver, his blocking has REALLY fallen off. Most guys either develop as a receiver or as a blocker, but it is pretty rare to get both. Fortunately, Roman has done a fairly good job of that.

Thats a nice later round roster filler. Not Bowers but dude may be able to play NFL ball and who knows - every know and then there’s a Kittle surprise out there. Not betting the house on it.
