Only downside = He's only got 2 yrs left on his rookie deal before LAC has to re-sign or tag him. the upside is that for two years his cap hits are a steal for the best proven veteran CB in football. $21M of his total $34M contract was in signing bonus

    Charger Cap Hit:
    2024: $3.7M
    2025: $5.3M

After 2025, his next contract will break the bank. He will get top contract in CB history imo. 2024 Franchise tag for CB is $20M, so by 2026 it will be ... $22-24M? What do we do then, Gzu? Sign him to a $25M APY 4 yr contract with 70% guaranteed?

Oh, wait - Tom isn't here anymore. ok, not sure what we'd do.
Don't we get the 5th year option too with the first contract? If so that's year 5 around $20 mil and then franchise tag for year 4. I would still do the deal to tie up a player like him for 4 years. Two Superbowls during that time for only dropping 5 spots.

I would take that deal in a heartbeat, but it won't happen, because Sean Payton is too smart to let it.

Surtain's fifth-year option will be picked up, which means he's under contract through 2025.

Sauce Gardner, with the fifth-year option picked up, will be under contract through 2026.

Barring injury, these are cornerbacks you want to build your defense around, so the huge contract is worth it. You don't trade them to move up and select quarterbacks with such limitations as Bo Nix (looks more Joey Harrington than Herbert) and J.J. McCarthy (who threw 30+ passes in a game only six times and had only three 300-yard passing games in college).

Let him hit FA, and we get a nice round 3 comp pick...

Probably because Pipkins was the better RT in 2022 than Salyer was at LT. More help was sent Salyer’s way being the prime example. He might be best as a swing tackle than a starter on the OL.

It really doesn't matter what happens 1-4.
Chargers at a minimum are getting either #1 or #2 non QB prospect on their board and the potential to trade out.
Joe knows this..and can wait to see what happens 1-4 before picking or trading... if Harrison goes to Arizona then the Vikings up to #5 for a QB becomes almost predictable. And Joe should be able to get #11 and #23.
Who has it better than us?

Why not flip with the giants and get their third (#70) and then either pick or trade again.

Because the Giants could take the quarterback the Vikings want.

Yeah but #11, #23 are worth more than our #5. It only works with teams desperate for a QB. We would have to give up a 2nd rounder to make it worth it for the Cards.
That's not going to work the way you think it would. Better chance of us trading straight up #5 to the Viking for #11, #23 and anything else we can get.

I didn't watch all the games. But in the ones I did watch Salyer did fine at LT without much help. Pipkins didn't so well against the elite pass rushers, but then again we failed to give him help. Our TEs were poor blockers and the RBs didn't help much either. If we had more help inside we could have tried Sayler at RT. Maybe that's what Harbaugh meant.

Trading Surtain to a divisional rival so they can draft a QB? I doubt LAC will trade with any divisional rival and if they were to it would cost a boat load more because of that fact. Hortiz would take them to the cleaners.

I really doubt any AFC West team is moving up for a QB in this draft. Donkos simply cannot afford to do that. They don’t even have a 2nd and they are paying for another teams starting QB. I just highly doubt they do any more bold moves. I bet the Donkos trade down and recoup that 2nd and draft Nix around 25. I think Penix falls to the 2nd. He’s old, injury riddled and has a long wind up throwing motion. I just am not seeing it unless MIN doesn’t get the trade they want and they are stuck with him at 23.
Also, trading with players involved is tricky. Teams can say that Surtain is worth 2 1’s but it’s Surtains team who wants to unload him. So as a respective trade team, I don’t give 2 fucks what they say. He’s worth a 1st and that it. Think you can do better, go ahead and find a better deal. You called me. No team is giving them 2 1’s cause they know they have DEN by the balls. Even more so if you are a divisional team. LAC are taking them to the cleaners. They aren’t losing on this trade and having to face a QB they allowed to go there for the next decade.
And then I gotta pay Surtain.. And his agent isn’t waiting at that point. He wants his new deal and he wants it now.
And now you’ve got to deal with a player/agent who might hold out if he doesn’t get his new contract. All of these factors have to be ironed out prior to a trade and it’s going to get expensive quick. Surtain could be a real pain in the ass if the team trading for him said they can’t do a deal right away with him. Then why are you trading for me? If I’m worth 2 1’s, why am I not being paid like that compensation? F you. Im holding out. And the deal falls apart. He has to be a willing trade partner. Or you got a whole new headache.

Harbaugh runs a lot of 6 O linemen sets. He’s a guy whose swing tackle and TE’s are really important.
It’s why the second he became the HC, the sports media started saying he would take an OT.
He went out of his way at the interview today, that he liked McFadden at C. Bozeman played G as well…
I just don’t think C is as high as we all thought…

Surtain is about ready for a top CB expensive contract right?
