Fair point about bad coaching hires but his drafts were also the problem. There is a chart that over his 11 years, if you take out the QB and passing game, his teams ranked 3rd worst in the NFL. Only like 4 or 5 of his non first rounders signed a second contract with the team

And maybe John was also helping make the decisions - but by those metrics - he was a bottom tier GM. I wish him similar success with the Raiders - though less playoff wins and less playoff appearances.

Too many projects in key mid rounds. Just draft us some good football players that can get on the field and help the team. The Chiefs won a Super Bowl with 10 rookies contributing

I dont want Gus Edwards either lol. He has zero recieving skills and is just a depth guy. He only has been starting in Baltimore because Dobbins keeps getting these devastating injuries. And even then he was splitting time with the rookie Keaton Mitchell til he tore his ACL.

Just me, but i Just draft a RB or two. Even if we sign Swift he will cost 5 mil a year or more. Id rather use that towards a OC or CB. Might be able to get Antonio Gibson for 3-4 mil a year and he is younger at 26, will be 27 when season starts. Gus will be 29.

This offseason we will see some surprises. Cant wait to see what they do.

Not getting the argument Bowers coming to us means he’s coming to an established and successful O. Even with Herbert, our O kinda sucked, especially late in games (3rd quarter, anyone?). We also have a big hurdle with not winning one-score games. Could a player like Bowers help with that? Sure I can see the possibilities, maybe, hard telling, but so could a lot of the top talent in this draft, we need help everywhere. 5-12.

Trade down seems most prudent, more picks (especially the first few rounds) means more chances to land some good players.

disagree.... more "chances" at finding a good player vs taking an elite nearly cant miss diference making player at 5 is what keeps you a bad team..... NEVER pass on elite players!

Some here keep bringing up other talented size/speed TE's.... like winslow jr.... pitts....BUT those guys were atheletic but lacked the toughness and physicality needed..... Bowers has size and speed and athletics but he ALSO is OLD SCHOOL HARBAUGH STYLE TOUGH...... he blocks, he runs over people.... he wears defenses out and can oout run DB's.... he also can play big FB type RB with speed.....he ran a sweep for over 70 yard TD in college.... and the Chargers have not had a great TE or great offense since Gates and Winslow.... our existing TE's are nt great and cant even stay on the field.... Henry was a good number 2 TE......not a number one... Bower's tough attitude is contageous to rest of offense......

example: who was better and had more impact?: Polomalu or the 2 iffy scrubs we traded him for?....when we had just let Harrison go so we needed a great safety?

Not saying Bowers is only elite player in this draft, but there are several to many good to great WR's, RB's, OT's, DE's, DB's.....and we already have some players at those positions.....

Thank goodness we now have a great coach and personel guy to make the right decisions..... instead of TT throwing darts..... lol

Stick him on an NFL defensive end, and the end will toss the guy aside.

I'd welcome him to the team, particularly since Harbaugh knows what he wants to put together.
But at this point, I'd be very cautious about expecting this guy to be the pick at #5,
in an era of physically dominating your opponents.

I'll also mention that there was a pic posted here of Bowers in a Michigan uniform with Harbaugh and others. It was suggested since some senior bowl measurements came up shorter than they were listed and perhaps Bowers was going to measure under 6'4".

If you look at that picture, Harbaugh is said to be 6'3', and Bowers is taller than him by more than an inch and JH is wearing a hat.

Harbaugh was 6'3" as a football player.
He would have lost about an inch at the time of the photo.

Judging between eye levels, Bowers is probably about 6'3" in height.

Not many TEs throw Mack or Max around. That's an OT's job. TEs chip block, help OT vs DE, pick up blitzing LB or S, go out for a pass.

Bowers is 6-4, 240, runs 4.48 reportedly. Agree @ Ben Herbert. He'll improve all who work out with Chargers.
Any disagree with Bowers measurements will have to wait for combine to have definitive proof.

I like Bowers, and if that’s the pick I’m not gonna hate on it at all, definitely addresses a need with a stud. Just think the top 3 WRs project to a higher NFL ceiling. Again, if we pick Bowers and he’s all that and a bag of chips, I’ll be happy to be wrong, I usually am lol.

A couple of other things to remember about TE

1). Since so few teams have good pass-catching TE is that the offenses tend to be a bit more prolific. If you take the production from a bunch of TE who are just guys ... it becomes tough to overcome the overall lack of production even if you have 3 top notch WR. A good pass catching RB can help, but we are (probably) going to lose that too. And it is not like our 3rd WR has ever been that productive.

2). Inline TE are kinda hard to double team. You can do it, but it messes up the structure of the D, and that leads to coverage breakdowns and stuff that helps the players around them.

3). Some of the problems we have faced lately offensively is that we simply do not attack defenses in the middle of the field very well. Most good D need to be forced to defend the entire field, and our inconsistency on offense shows because of it.

4). As far as roster building goes, TE are cheaper than WR are. The savings allow us to address other positions at some point, and if we are as successful as we think with a good young TE and HC who likes to use them (both as blockers and receivers), the extra money should help to sustain the roster.

It starts up front, but there have been good OL and DL lines who never make it to the SB. And plenty of OL and DL have had players of lesser draft status develop into good or great players.

Your example is poor because KC had a good OL prior to the SB. They lost that SB NOT because of how the roster was built. KC lost that SB because unlucky timing of a couple of injuries. KC HAD a great line that year. No team can overcome 2 starting OT missing the SB, unless the other team's edge rushers are hurt too.

You obviously missed the point. People on here act like having an All-Pro tight end is more important than pass protection. Kansas City's offensive line in the Super Bowl sucked, Travis Kelce put up great stats, Patrick Mahomes had the worst performance of his career, and the Chiefs lost, 31-9. If Travis Kelce had suffered a season-ending injury before the Super Bowl, but the Chiefs had a healthy offensive line, I'm sure they would have performed much better than losing 31-9. They may have even won.
