I get it...not sexy...but damn solid piece...and in that mock, you are assuming Dobbins is as good or better this next season, and Vidal can improve to fill in nicely when needed...

Unfortunately, we can't get Hampton AND Loveland AND Booker...not all three...or whoever your flavor is...in a scenario where we wait on RB...not bad...and this is a very deep class...
I havent studied his tape but i watched a few Michigan games this season.

In this draft we get a solid TE who plays inline, happy with that and then this RB is an Edwards, Najee Harris type...I just want another explosive weapon in this offense to go with Ladd. Love to be a trench team like the eagles but they still have weapons that break games open...Saquan, AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith

It’s one way of looking at the draft.
I am not down on Mullings but might be more intrigued by Gordon if he dropped to the 5th. i know he had a down year but he moved well in the Senior Bowl and was huge in 2023. Or another 230 pounder Rocket Sanders who runs 4.4 will likley be a 5th or 6th rounder.

Many RB options in all rounds of this draft.

Mullings is ok but i dont want Donovan Edwards just because he went to Michigan unless its the 7th or he drops to UDFA

Loveland, Egbuka, Golden, Omarion, Tre Harris, Fanin, TreVeyon, Arroyo, Mason Taylor, Savion, Skattebo, Gunnar Helm, Ollie Gordon, Devin Neal, Gadsden, Damien Martinez, Trevor Etienne, Raheim

vs. Donovan Jackson, Tuimoloau, Jared Wilson

and the three players you mentioned are basically first round talents, if not top ten, and so.... guessin' your lean is spending 22 on one of Loveland, Egbuka or Omarion, and guessin' again that you'll need one more explosive player to pair w/your first rounder and Ladd ?? unless you plan to spend the monies on Tee ??

and not sure where you draw the line for explosive w/the above listed players ?? personally would say Henderson could be the most explosive of the bunch, albeit he is an injury concern ??

and would prolly opt for Arroyo over Taylor, @least in terms of explosive plays ?? Savion is prolly another that would slot higher if looking for explosive plays ??

is Devin Neal more a consideration if looking for big play(makers) ?? anybody else worth more consideration than not, and given your criterion ??

I understand what you are saying beach. This is just about fun and preferences. in the end I trust Hortiz but i do hope for a fun offense to watch not just a trench wear them down team like Michigan was

Doesnt have to be all early. I understand DL or Edge could go first. I mentioned in another post another later RB like Sanders who is 230 but runs fast. or maybe a DJ Giddens later who has great moves in the open field. A big power back does make sense if we keep Dobbins though. But there are a few 225 lb backs with good talent.

Maybe I am selling Mullings short a bit. I wont be unhappy with him, he is just not my first choice, dont want him just because he is a Wolverine. If these guys want as dominant a run game as they advertise, why not shore up IOL and then go to battle with a pair like Dobbins and Hampton!?

          Many possibilities

Chargers 7-round mock draft, 1.0: Alabama’s Tyler Booker could be plug-and-play guard

By Daniel Popper Feb 11, 2025

            33

The Philadelphia Eagles trounced the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, and the NFL offseason has now officially begun.
That means it is time for our first Los Angeles Chargers mock draft of 2025 — Mock 1.0.
This will be one of four Chargers-specific seven-round mock drafts I will publish between now and the draft at the end of April. Mock 2.0 will come out after the dust has settled from what should be an active free-agency window for general manager Joe Hortiz and coach Jim Harbaugh. Mocks 3.0 and 4.0 will be published in April in the lead-up to the draft, with 4.0 serving as my best guess at what I think the Chargers will be with their projected 10 picks.

As I wrote in the offseason handbook last month, the Chargers’ Day 3 picks will not be set until the league announces the compensatory picks ahead of the draft. They are locked into No. 22 in the first round, No. 55 in the second round and No. 86 in the third round. Compensatory picks begin at the end of the third round. So the Chargers’ exact pick spots in rounds 4 through 7 are still subject to change. They have even changed slightly from the picks listed in the handbook. The Detroit Lions are projected to receive a third-round comp pick because the New York Jets hired defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, a minority candidate, as their head coach. That has pushed all the Chargers’ projected picks back one slot.
            On to the mock.

Round 1, Pick 22: Tyler Booker, G, Alabama

I still cannot shake the feeling of watching the Houston Texans front dominate the Chargers offensive line in the playoffs. The interior of the line struggled in pass protection all season, and that weakness showed up in the biggest game. Hortiz and Harbaugh want an offense that can dominate the line of scrimmage. The game in Houston put on full display that the Chargers are not there yet. I think improving the interior of the offensive line will be a priority for Harbaugh and Hortiz this offseason.
Booker has tremendous size (6-foot-5, 325 pounds) and strength. He is a physical run blocker. He plays with a mean streak. He fits the vision. Right guard Trey Pipkins has a $9.25 million cap hit in 2025. The Chargers can save $6.75 million if they cut Pipkins. Booker was a left guard at Alabama, but he could be a one-for-one replacement for Pipkins on the right side. If the Chargers draft Booker, they would have four first-round picks on their offensive line, including Rashawn Slater, Joe Alt and Zion Johnson.

Round 2, Pick 55: Mason Taylor, TE, LSU

The Chargers should consider tight end in the first round, especially if Penn State’s Tyler Warren falls to them. Michigan’s Colston Loveland is potentially a more realistic possibility. However, if they decide to bolster the offensive line in the first round, they will have options at tight end in the second round.
Taylor has a well-rounded skill set. The Chargers have not had a tight end like this since Hunter Henry left after the 2020 season. Blocking is a necessity for tight ends in Greg Roman’s offense. Taylor offers enough as a blocker and he caught 55 passes for 546 yards last season for the Tigers. Taylor is the son of Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor, and that shows up in his frame — 6-foot-4, 250 pounds. Taylor is a smooth mover for his size.

Round 3, Pick 86: Pat Bryant, WR, Illinois

Hortiz and Harbaugh should be looking for a very specific skill set at receiver this offseason. Ladd McConkey had a breakout rookie year and he projects as a star player in the slot for years to come. What they need is an outside receiver who can attack down the field, especially in 50-50 ball situations. The receiver room was missing that element last season. McConkey was really the only player on the roster who could consistently beat man coverage. Opposing defenses were aware of that and regularly doubled or even tripled McConkey in coverage.
Having a ball-winner on the outside could open things up for McConkey. It would also move Quentin Johnston into a role that better fits his strengths, namely on crossing routes that allow him to get the ball in yards-after-catch situations. Bryant is 6-foot-3, 200 pounds and showed 50-50 ball capabilities in college. He also had a nice showing at the Senior Bowl last month.

Round 4, Pick 124: David Walker, edge, Central Arkansas

The Chargers’ need at edge will fluctuate based on what happens with Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. Mack is a pending free agent. Bosa has the highest cap hit of any edge rusher in football in 2025, and that feels untenable. My projection right now: Mack re-signs, and the Chargers cut Bosa to save more than $25 million in space. That would leave the Chargers with Mack, Tuli Tuipulotu and Bud Dupree in the edge room. I think they could add an early Day 3 edge rusher to complete that room, in that scenario.

If Mack signs elsewhere, I think the Chargers would have to draft an edge rusher earlier than the fourth round. But I see that as unlikely. Walker measured at 6-foot with 31.75-inch arms at the Senior Bowl. Some teams will not even consider an edge rusher who is that undersized. But Walker was very impressive in his one-on-one reps, showcasing a pretty diverse repertoire and NFL-level power.

Seth McLaughlin won the Rimington Trophy as the county’s best center despite missing the end of the season with a torn Achilles. (Mark J. Rebilas / Imagn Images)

Round 5, Pick 159: Seth McLaughlin, C, Ohio State

A big item on the to-do list for Harbaugh and Hortiz is finding a long-term solution at center. Compared to last year, this is not a good center draft class. Three centers went in the top 51 picks in 2024 — Graham Barton, Jackson Powers-Johnson and Zach Frazier. This year, only North Dakota State’s Grey Zabel has a chance of getting into that range. So the Chargers are going to have to get creative with their fix at center.
McLaughlin was trending toward being a higher pick, but he tore his Achilles in practice in late November. He still went on to win the Rimington Trophy as the country’s best center. My thought with this pick: The Chargers could sign a stopgap in free agency — perhaps Ryan Kelly — and draft McLaughlin as the center of the future, with the hopes he could work his way back onto the field late in the season. Re-signing Bradley Bozeman is also an option as a stopgap.

Round 5, Pick 177: Kalel Mullings, RB, Michigan

How the Chargers approach running back will hinge on what they decide to do with J.K. Dobbins, who is a pending free agent. Dobbins had a bounce-back year in 2024, moving past multiple significant injuries to post a career high in scrimmage yards. If Dobbins walks, running back becomes a much more pressing need. Mullings played for Harbaugh at Michigan. He is a big, physical runner at 6-foot-2, 239 pounds. I like his vision.

Round 6, Pick 183: Bilhal Kone, CB, Western Michigan

Hortiz hit gold at cornerback in the fifth last year when he selected both Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart. Can he find another starter on Day 3 this year? I think nickel is the best position for Still long term. Derwin James Jr. also played a ton at nickel over the second half of last season. I think the Chargers should be looking for more of an outside type in the draft. Kone has good size and length at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds. The traits are worth a shot in the sixth round.

Round 6, Pick 201, Jamaree Caldwell, IDL, Oregon

The Chargers got some great football out of interior defensive linemen Poona Ford and Teair Tart last season. They were both on one-year deals and are now pending free agents. Morgan Fox is also a pending free agent. If the Chargers can bring all three players back, they can probably pass on an interior defensive lineman in the draft. They drafted Justin Eboigbe in the fourth round last year, and he was a non-factor as a rookie. The Chargers should get some more out of Eboigbe in Year 2.
Still, I think Ford could have a sizable market given what he put on tape last season. It will be interesting to see how much the Chargers are willing to offer Ford. If Ford leaves in free agency, the Chargers will have a big hole at nose tackle. I see a lot of Ford in Caldwell’s game. Like Ford, Caldwell lacks some height. Caldwell measured in at 6-foot-2 at the Senior Bowl. But he makes up for it with short-area quickness and an ability to penetrate, both as a pass rusher and run defender.

Round 6, Pick 215: Kurtis Rourke, QB, Indiana

Justin Herbert is the only quarterback the Chargers have under contract for 2025. Backup Taylor Heinicke and third-stringer Easton Stick are pending free agents. There will be some veteran backup options available on the free-agent market. The Chargers could also look to add a potential long-term backup answer in the draft.
Rourke transferred to Indiana from Ohio for 2024. He led the Hoosiers to an 11-2 finish and a College Football Playoff berth. He reportedly played the entire season on a re-torn ACL that required surgery in January. Rourke plays with the type of anticipation that could make him an interesting backup flier late in the draft.

Round 7, Pick 253: Teddye Buchanan, ILB, California

Buchanan spent last season at Cal after transferring from UC Davis. He finished 2024 with 114 tackles. The Chargers need to give special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken some core coverage players this offseason. Linebackers Nick Niemann and Troy Dye are pending free agents. Dye played the most special team snaps of any Charger last season. Niemann finished fourth despite missing the first quarter of the season with a hamstring injury. Buchanan played well at the East-West Shrine Bowl last month and could be an immediate special teams contributor while adding depth behind the projected starting duo of Daiyan Henley and Junior Colson.

Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Round 4, Pick 124: David Walker, edge, Central Arkansas

I don't see us going small on the DL. Especially with a small college guy.

In round 6 though, who knows. We loaded with late picks, maybe they waste one on a situational pas rusher.

I like my countryman Kurtis Rourke in Poppers Mock. Origin aside he is a savy, competitive guy who played all year on a torn ACL, not just a game like Rivers, a season! Thats a gamer we want! Could develop into a really good back up. Not the hugest arm like Herbert but smart and accurate with good timing. Good size too

His older brother Nathan plays for my home team in the CFL and was the best QB in the league before he was on the Jags practise squad for a year before returning to CFL as one of the highes paid players. Kurtis has higher upside for NFL though, I think he becomes a good QB2. Better than Stick all this time.

We need a QB in this draft. I'm hoping for Kyle McCord of Syracuse, but Roarke is an interesting prospect too.

Linsley was a Day 3 pick from THEEE Ohio State

I think the current center, Myers was a day 2 pick

Like Popper wrote -- sign a bridge center like Kelly and draft him in R5

I didn't mind Poppers mock but if they get a RG in free agency, that opens up Edge or DT in Round 1. And I think they need to draft 2 Edge players - since Dupree is on the last year and if Mack is back, going to need his replacement.

glad to see that Popper's response to the Iggles SB performance is not to beef up our Dline, but to offer some resistance to the opponent's Dline, and to get us some Oline reinforcement, and.... personally prefer Donovan Jackson to Booker, as think he is more what peoples here want, in terms of being able to better deal w/stunts, games and the like @OG.

Popper also mentions that we have problems w/our pass blocking, and.... as some of us wanted Fuaga over Alt, JH2 went w/the guy who was a more balanced blocker over the better run blocker, and so.... chances are they might be looking for IOL that can better do both, and rather than just predominantly run block ??

and gonna be interesting to see what JH2 does @TE, as personally don't think Warren has much of a ceiling if any, and that Loveland does, and is the more likely of the two to be on board @22, and.... Mason Taylor def fits the Harbaugh profile of an inline blocking TE that can catch, and.... they did bring in Hurst, and one would think that Loveland would be just fine for a Harbaugh built team ??

and along those lines, and while I get the love for Taylor, think I prefer taking my chances w/Arroyo rather than Taylor, and prefer Oronde over the both of 'em, and.... won't be surprised to see a coupla few of them still on the board @86 ??

and just like Mason Taylor is more likely a round three talent, do think that the both of Bryant & Walker are more day three guys than day two/early day three gets ??

and speaking again of day three guys, am going to be surprised if Zabel isn't a day three guy himself, and.... if Thorn is correct that McLaughlin rates higher than Jared Wilson, will take the value w/the latter over Seth, 'specially if Wilson lasts 'til 124 for us, and in which case would prolly go OG round one, RB round two, TE round three, and then OC Wilson round four ??

and can't really complain 'bout Kalel Mullings, as he def looks like he could help fill out your roster, just don't know if you could still get a Rocket Sanders there instead ??

will also volunteer that if I recall corectly, that CBs just under 6' tall have had more success than the taller varieties, and so not giving Popper's selection @CB any bonus points/benefit of the doubt there, and actually question that selection, and as eye personally prefer a Jaylin Smith there, if still on the board that late in the game.

and don't know a ton 'bout Jamaree Caldwell, and not overly enthused from what I do see, and.... some mocks still have Stackhouse there @200 or so, and if so, the much better get me thinx ??

will again volunteer that I like the position selections @LB & QB to close things out in Popper's mock, albeit my guy for emergency QB3 is Donovan Smith, and.... not overly familiar w/Teddeye Buchanan, but think he fits as LB depth, albeit again my guy there is Cody Simon, and.... just a matter if the any of 'em last that long, but both good gets far as eye can surmise ?? !!
