WR Artavis Scott. Mike Williams teammate.

      Overview

Even though Scott is only a true junior, he managed to earn his communication studies degree in just two and a half years. That's as impressive a feat as his gaining all-conference accolades in all three of his seasons with the Tigers. Scott was a USA Today Freshman All-American and third-team All-ACC pick in 2014 with 76 catches for 965 yards and eight touchdowns. He came back to make 93 catches the next season, covering 901 yards and six touchdowns, in addition to 371 kick return yards on his way to first-team All-ACC honors. The Florida all-star aided Deshaun Watson for the Tigers' second run at a national title in 2016, garnering second-team all-conference notice with 71 catches for 592 yards (just a 8.3-yard average, his third straight year with a decrease in that category) and five scores (not including college football playoff games).

      Analysis

Strengths Able to wall off defenders to protect the throw and make contested catches. Will cut slant short and sink into space if he sees linebacker ready to blow up the catch. Can return both punts and kicks. Adequate concentration when ball is in the air. Hands catcher who will pluck it away from his body. Extends to snare the high throw. Shows subtle shake after catch to make first responders miss. Drops pad into contact and falls forward for additional yardage at the finish. Had momentum shifting kickoff return against Louisville. Sure-handed as punt returner.

Weaknesses Catch-and-go target who tends to get what scheme offers him. Not particularly quick or fast. Missing kick out of his breaks for route separation. Routes lacking in vertical push and purpose. Needs to play at his top speed more often. At times, will drift in his routes relying on scheme and route combinations to open him up. Lacks length and long speed for vertical separation. This season, managed one catch out of eight targets beyond 21 yards. Missing sudden component teams desire from slot.

      Draft Projection Rounds 5-6

Sources Tell Us "System receiver. With (Mike) Williams out last year he showed more than we saw this year, but I don't think he has any must-have qualities. His way onto a team will have to be as a return man." -- AFC regional scout

Bottom Line Too small and slow on the outside and lacks the suddenness and shiftiness that teams like from the slot. Scott has a competitive streak in him and made his share of big plays for Clemson, but he may lack the physical attributes to make an impact as a pro receiver. His ability to contribute on special teams will help, but a big combine might be necessary to bump his draft value even more.

Scott is a pretty solid return guy. If anything it gives Williams some support as a new guy.

Football is all about the legs, and he has them.

            Chargers signed WR Artavis Scott.
Scott (5’10/193) turned pro as a junior after logging a career 245/2,480/19 (10.1 YPR) receiving line at Clemson, clearing 75 catches in all three years. ACC coaches voted him second-team all-conference in 2016. Unfortunately, Scott showed brutal athleticism at the Combine with 1st-percentile SPARQ results, including 4.61 speed and a 7.19 three-cone time. Scott was a college overachiever who benefited from playing across from Mike Williams. He’d do well to carve out a career as a special teamer and situational slot option in the Jerricho Cotchery mold.

              I'm 1st percentile too.

If I was a wr, I think I'd look for a different team than the Bolts as a UDFA. Our spots are filled up.

As a potential backup he needs to stand out on STs and learn pass protection too. Not to mention being able to elude NFL defenders. But if Oliver could do it, so can Ekeler...
