    Clearly Boltnut already misses Jahleel,
    as his rankings do not factor in tackling, reading routes, football IQ or consistency.

    Tape is king...
    but it's not
    da only ting.

    We do not play modern football.

Out of college, I liked him, but I thought he was a combination safety... not a true FS. I think we can upgrade the position with a 2nd or 3rd round pick. While I don't think any of them are 1st rounders, I think there are 6 or 7 safeties that earn a 2nd or 3rd round grade from me. My safety rankings: 1) Juan Thornhill 2) Deionte Thompson 3) Chauncey Gardner-Johnson 4) Jonathan Abram 5) Darnell Savage 6) Nasir Adderley 7) Taylor Rapp.
      Rapp at 7? Lol....but we all have our opinions....if it's the speed question, it's fixing to get answered at his pro day....though he already posted outstanding times in the 20 and 60 yard shuffles at the combine. Second and first, respectively, among the DBS who had the stones or health to run those events.

      Apart from the stopwatch, he is at or near the top of the class in football IQ , instincts, and tackling....has shown he can play man or zone, and was even used at nickel corner in a pinch.

      Did I mention the great tackler part?

      You don't want a Safety in the first, I get it....I like some of the 2nd and 3rd round prospects too....but 7th on your list!?:wtfrudoing:

      Edit: On rereading, I might have come off a little harsh with the smilie...I've just been itching to use that cat for something!!

        Don't look now... but Chargers had a private workout with Jonathan Abram. They also met with Juan Thornhill and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson at their pro-days the last couple of days.

          Those are all good players but who they meet with don't mean much.
          They meet with upwards to 50 players and have even drafted some that the player said they never talked to them.

            Strong indication that we are in the safety market though.

              I saw that about Abram...weird. Definitely a box guy...though amazing at it. My guess is they feel he is so talented, that if he were to fall to us, we might have to take him, and adjust our defensive mindset to fit him in somewhere. Hence doing the homework on him.

                Like to pretend to GM.
                Criteria when evaluating prospects;

                Experience (games played)
                Competition (conference/opponents)
                Medical (durability/availability)
                Strengths/Weaknesses (game film)
                Versatility (can play multiple positions on the field)
                Awareness (football IQ & instincts)
                Intangibles (leadership & dedication to the game)
                Measurable (combine numbers)

                Keep it very simple. For each criteria, check if its good = 1 point. Or x if its bad = minus 1 point.
                NA if Versatility does not apply. They won't be playing other positions.
                Max score = 8
                Min score = (- 8)

                Score of 7 to 8 = 1st rd
                Score of 5 to 6 = 2nd rd
                Score of 3 to 4 = 3rd rd
                Score of 1 to 2 = 4th/5th rd
                Score of 0 = 6th/7th rd
                Score of -1 to -2 = UDFA
                Score of -3 or more. Don't bring into camp. Let some other team spend time/money on this prospect.

                Rate your prospects and see where they fit.

                Example: Andre Dillard-OT, Washington State (Score = 8 Rd 1)

                Medical = check + 1
                Strengths/Weaknesses = check + 1
                Versatility = check + 1
                Awareness = check + 1
                Intangibles = check + 1
                Measurable = check + 1

                Example: Erik McCoy-OC, Texas A&M (Score = 4 Rd 3)
                Experience = check +1
                Competition = check + 1
                Medical = check + 1
                Strengths/Weaknesses = check + 1
                Versatility = x -1
                Awareness = x - 1
                Intangibles = check + 1
                Measurable = check + 1

                Example: Iosua Opeta-OG, Weber State (Score = 0 Rd 6th/7th)
                Experience = check +1
                Competition = x - 1
                Medical = check + 1
                Strengths/Weaknesses = x - 1
                Versatility = x -1
                Awareness = x - 1

                  Those are all athletic Safeties.

                  They all have splash plays...and inconsistencies.

                  So did Malik Hooker, who we passed on.

                  Film study must also be augmented by looking at reports on intangibles, and only pro scouts can may those calls.

                    I'm guessing "In-the-box" safety is not where they're working him out. Derwin has those responsibilities nailed down. They're kicking the tires on his back-end abilities. They only have 30 private visits allowed. Abrams is a perfect player to schedule a workout for. Doesn't have a lot of tape at the specific position they envision him at (FS). But obviously they think he has the skillset to play FS... or that they think he's valuable enough to change defensive philosophy. I'll bet the former. Earl Thomas was a college "in-the-box" safety at Texas that the Seahawks correctly identified as an NFL free safety.

                        The more reading I do on Abram, the more I get the feeling he is considered a box guy because he excels there...but he wasn't really exposed as a liability in coverage in college by any means...you may be right there, except...did we have him in for a private workout, or just a interview/chalk board session?

                          Nice. I scores him a little different. 3rd rd. But he is a 2nd rd pick with your score.
