Chargers general manager Tom Telesco went into the 2019 NFL draft looking to come out with seven players that would have some sort of impact on the team. But in terms of the evaluation process, Telesco appeared to have a criteria that the players had to meet in order to be considered with their selection.

The prospects had to possess a great amount of athleticism, and it was evident that Telesco put a big emphasis on it when making his decisions.

According to Relative Athletic Score (RAS), a measure created by Kent Lee Platte, the Bolts' draft class had an average RAS of 8.63 (out of 10), which was the highest, topping the Saints (8.61) and Packers (8.5).

RAS uses a combination of size and athletic testing numbers to produce a composite score for each player.

    Let's take

Tranquill rated as the highest member among the rest of the draft class with a 9.87 rating. It may come as a surprise because he didn't appear as much of an athlete on film, as he lacked explosiveness and agility. But at the combine, Tranquill tested as a 80 percentile or better in the 40 (4.57), vertical (37.5-inch), broad (10'2), short shuttle (4.14) and bench (31 reps).

Tillery wasn't that far off from his former teammate at Notre Dame with a 9.72. He was a standout at the combine, but the testing replicated exactly what was displayed on the tape. For a man of his size, Tillery is fast, fluid and smooth, and he has ideal lateral quickness, hip snap and flexibility. That'll all translate to dominant presence in the trenches.

Stick was the only other player that had a rating over nine with a 9.45. The former North Dakota State is quite the athlete. He was among the best at his position at the combine where he posted phenomenal numbers, including a 4.05 short shuttle and 6.65 three-cone drill. These numbers are exactly why coach Anthony Lynn stated that he could be used in a Taysom Hill role.

The only two outliers were safety Nasir Adderley and linebacker Emeke Egbule, who each rated under eight. They didn't test as well as others, which is why their perspective numbers are lower, but the tape shows a great amount of athleticism needed.

The Chargers picked several high RAS players in previous draft. But the 2019 class was littered with top athletes, and they just couldn't pass on them. The emphasis in Los Angeles was to bring in the big, fast and explosive players, and hopefully that is the recipe to a successful 2019 season.
    Great insight.

One caveat to this. Denver had several recent draft busts taking athletes over football players. They only recently scrapped those plans due to multiple failures.

There is no magic formula for quality football players. Make your pick and take your chance. Great athletes fail; great, highly productive college players fail.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Looks like we are going to have a battle for the P position.... a tale of two Tylers.... Ty Long was signed in January... he was released by the BC Lions (Canada). It says that he was both a place kicker and punter.... and now we have added Tyler Newsome to the mix out of Notre Dame (how may Golden Domers is that?). This is often an overlooked position in football and it is terribly important that we get it right. Usually they are the holders for kicks as well... so gotta have good hands. We got that with Jones last year but his punting left a lot to be desired.... hopefully one of the Tylers is a diamond in the rough.

Overall... looks like a lot of intriguing UDFAs... The Chargers seem to always have one that makes the team... I wonder who it will be this year?

Jeremy Cox has very intriguing measurables, runs w/power/speed/vision/burst/wiggle, natural catcher of the football, has some games missed due to injury, and had a monster game against VT.

RB Jeremy Cox carried the ball 20 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns, including the final score, to lead Old Dominion past Virginia Tech 49-35. Cox also ...
