We just selected a starting pitcher (Cal Quantrill of Stanford) that has already had Tommy-John surgery - and he's only 20 years old. One of the analysts at mlb.com stated the best predictor or future injury is past injury and with all the healthy high-ceiling arms available he didn't like the pick.
After selecting a pitcher coming off Tommy John the Padres go with a shortstop ranked #91 on mlb.com's big board. Problem is he was the #24 pick in the draft. Wow.
We just selected another TJ pitcher in Mason Thompson. He was much higher in the draft until the TJ issue but still I need to ask why would the Padres take such risks so early on a couple TJ pitchers?
I saw that. I guess if you really feel strongly about a guy, OK. But now this is two TJs before the 4th round and another guy coming off injury whose mechanics are all fouled up.
Supposedly the Padres will draft some good talents in rounds 11-20 that have made it known they will require overslot offers - mega overslot in fact (to keep from going back to school). The Padres started with the third largest draft pool in the league and Preller promised all of that money would be spent. So we'll see later today.
