The lack of deep threats is huge against DEN because they just allocate some of their all-pro DBs to help out in the middle.
DEN defense is like the Great Wall, if it has a crack, it's in the middle, intermediate area where their LBs have to cover the receivers.
In other to take advantage of that, teams need to have: A good QB. Good receivers running short routes, option routes in the intermediate area. Deep threats that demand respect and draw DEN's DBs away, open up the middle.
Last year in the Championship Game, NE's lacked of a reliable deep threat hurts them. LaFell was a bust last year. And Gronk isn't a deep threat, his big chunks are from running after the catch. That's why ATL this year successfully duplipcated their blueprint against DEN's D, because they have Julio Jones, the best deep threat in the NFL.
CIN, HOU have deep threats but don't have good enough QBs and reliable intermediate targets. Also, HOU was missing Will Fuller in that game, and Hopkins has been regressing and is a big disappointment this season.
We were somewhat having success against them early because we have Rivers, he and Big Ben are the best deep ball passers in the league. We were also have good balance in the passing game with dangerous deep threats (Benjamin, T-Will), middle guys (Gordon, Inman, Hunter/Gates). DEN was respected Rivers, Benjamin and T-Will, afraid to get beat deep, and it was opened up for Gordon and Hunter underneath.
Now, in this game if either Benjamin and T-Will is out, it will be a huge blow for the offense. Of course we can win this game, we have a good team, but it will be much tougher than last time we faced them.
No more big lead. They'll come out hungry for some payback. It will be a close and hard fought game.
With McCoy chose Burse over Dom Williams, I suspected that Benjamin is the one who's more bang up than T-Will.
