Chargers Head Coaching Prospect - Defensive Prospect

The Rams needed to act quickly after the 2019 season ended. For all intents and purposes, the team’s most vital expiring contracts fell upon defensive leaders for the team. While the Rams were still solid with star-power with All-Pro Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, the team needed to reformulate the defense. The LA Rams parted ways with Wade Phillips, and in his place brought in Denver Broncos OLB coach Brandon Staley. Staley was the assistant to defensive coordinator guru Vic Fangio, whose defense befuddled Sean McVay's offense over and over.

Enter rookie defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Early into the season, Staley emphasized the fact that he was a former quarterback, and intended to put the defense on the attack. He proved early in the season that he would commit the defense to play both the pass and the run well. But the greatest attribute of this defense is the ability to adjust at halftime to stymie the opponent in the second half of games.

Rams Defense 168 points allowed. Next closest is the Pittsburgh Steelers with 174. Staley was with Vic Fangio and has coached-up great outside linebackers like Khalil Mack and Von Miller, he could build our next 3-4 defense. He's young. His defense is taking on Tampa right now.

This is my candidate, I am all in on him. He's young, defensive-minded and he's across the parking lot from the Chargers.

I liked John Pagano's defense when he was here. Does Chuck bring him in? Would be cool

Vic Fangio and Brandon Staley were the team that coached the Bears defense.

On September 1, 2018, the Bears acquired star linebacker Khalil Mack in a blockbuster trade with the Raiders, as well as a 2020 second-round pick, in exchange for a 2019 first-round pick, 2020 first-round pick, 2020 third-round pick and 2019 sixth-round pick.

The season opener was in six days away, so OLB coach Brandon Staley had to quickly get his newest pupil up to speed in order for Chicago to take full advantage of his talents against Green Bay. Despite the tight window, Mack finished with a strip-sack, pick-six, fumble recovery and three combined tackles in his debut, a narrow 24-23 Bears loss.

"I can remember walking by Brandon's office and seeing him try to get Khalil up to date with the defense ASAP," Nagy said. "Didn't have any training camp and stepped in the first game and had a career game. So just a guy that you could see was really learning a lot through Vic's defense and then taking it and putting his own spin on it, and now elevating it to himself now and doing a great job there in L.A." - Bears H.C. Matt Nagy - 2018

Working with Brandon Staley in his first year in Chicago, Bears head coach Matt Nagy isn't surprised to see Staley succeeding as the Rams defensive coordinator. Nagy also says former Bears linebacker Leonard Floyd is "playing well" for the Rams.

One of the other outside linebackers Staley coached that season reunited with him this season in OLB Leonard Floyd, who signed a one-year deal with Los Angeles after Chicago declined to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, making him a free agent.

Nagy said those types of difficult business decisions are made every year by him and Bears general manager Ryan Pace, but that didn't make it easy letting Floyd go.

"We love the person. I think Leonard is a really, really awesome person. I think he's a really good player," Nagy said. "But when you start getting into the business side of it, there's just decisions that got to be made. And that was one of the tough ones that we had to make."

Floyd has amassed 14 combined tackles and two sacks in six games. His four tackles for loss are currently second on the Rams behind defensive lineman Aaron Donald's 8.5.

"Watching him this year and what he's doing for Brandon Staley and for (head) coach (Sean) McVay, you're seeing a guy that's making plays at certain times that we saw in the past, and he always is going to play hard. They're doing a great job with him and he's playing well."

IMO, What I'd like to see is Brandon Staley announced as Chargers' head coach, he focuses on the defense and bringing in competent special teams play, and he lets QB Coach Pep Hamilton and OC Shane Steichen remain and handle the offense. With the pieces he has on defense, I believe Staley could draft and build the Chargers' front seven into a elite group with a consistent pass rush out of their base alignment: 4-3 or 3-4 depends on his assessment of the talent on-hand.

Fangio is another failing HC as a first timer. The moral of the story for me, is NOT bring in another cheap first time HC. Staley seems to be a fine DC in his first 10 games as a DC but that dont make him ready to be a HC yet.

What happened to you being on the Wade DC wagon? You figured out Staley took over for him and now their defense dont suck? lol

And sorry, Staley wont be doing the drafting for us either. You know that isnt going to happen.

Bradley's defense ranked like that when he had the players in Seattle. I'd rather find someone who's doing more with less than someone who's riding the talent wave.

I as mentioned, let QB Coach Pep Hamilton and OC Shane Steichen remain and handle the offense. This unit is currently stacked with offensive skill players and putting up 35 points a game routinely, and we can get a young enthusiastic head coach to coordinate the Chargers defense and the pass rush scheme (3-4 vs. 4-3 philosophy) I believe it would right the ship.

The Chargers will no longer have the personnel to execute either a 3-4 or 4-3 with Melvin Ingram leaving the organization after the 2020 season.

Defense - Besides which scheme will dictate the defensive player profile the Chargers will target; Add to that a CB that can help the defense play man coverage.

Offense - Needs a new LT and a New Center.

And a new Special Teams coach.
