Since when do do DC not have at least some input into personnel? I can't see too many guy like Nolan sticking around the NFL if the GM and head coaches don't give them some input? Especially in situations like Atlanta, where it is clear the coaching staff is on it's way out if they don't correct some problems from the year before. Mike Smith was clearly on the hot seat all last year, and was really a surprise to have been back at all.
I also found it interesting to think anyone thought much of Soliai at all last year (a a FA), because he really only had 1 good game the year before, where Cinci ran right at him. He was basically a pile of goo, yet Atlanta decided to pay him $33 mill in FA, which just seemed odd. You don't usually pay NT that much, especially when they are coming off a really poor season. Again, to me that screams a DC that is really vouching for the player, since his performance didn't justify the salary.
Plus, it is not like Nolan just got there. He has been in Atlanta for the last 3 seasons. At what point does the DC have to be accountable for the lack of progress. It strikes me that if people on the board are negative about the lack of progress by Pagano, then Nolan should be a similar disappointment, yet that is not the feeling I get from others. I get the impression from the thread that Nolan is viewed a step up, and while I think he is an OK hire, I don't get too much of a warm fuzzy beyond that.
Usually a team doesn't spend that much money on FA to improve the run D. You usually reserve big FA signings for pass rushers, but Atlanta wasted it completely. Jackson and Soliai were terrrible signings and they complimented their bad pass rush by being unable to play the run.

I think Pagano has input but Id certainly not claim that he's the one picking guys to sign and draft.Hashtag thepowderblues

Nolan was a TREMENDOUS DC in Baltimore. And he did a very nice job, his one year in Denver, until he ran out of wrinkles to throw out there...and he didn't get along with Josh (which, is now no surprise).
His first year with the Falcons he had a tremendouse defense. I do know they lost some players, and they had some injuries, and they also decided to become an "offensive" football team with Ryan, Jones, et al...
Their defense was terrible the last 2 years, and with a new regime coming in, it was time for a change.
I always liked Nolan, and I was one of the guys who wanted him as DC. Shoot, after his first year in Atlanta, I wanted him looked at as a HC candidate."...of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

Nolan's defenses have consistently been good at creating turnovers, so that's one thing he's better at than Pagano. but other than that it's what he did way back with Baltimore that people remember, but Baltimore has had really good defenses regardless of who their DC was (so it must be the talent)
