yes, because he did it with only backups around him in a meaningless game with chiefs.....last game of year with just backups, he beat Chargers starters and ended chargers playoff hopes by dominating our defense...... Chargers starters had everything to play for and Rivers was maybe only charger to take that game seriously..... one of most embarrassing losses in chargers history...... BTW, he also out played us again in same situation but Chargers lucked out and barely won because of a bogus ref call that gave us a 2nd attempt at game winning FG.....
good backup QB......
The real reason we lost that 2014 season ender after starting out 8-4 was because Justin Houston was having a Donald/Watt type of season. Had 2 sacks and with Eddie Royal being our best WR behind the worst OL it was doomsday before the first snap. McCoy should have been fired after that game.
Signing Tyrod looks like shrewd business from Texans based on Watson thing. They have certainly had different experiences on the treatment table....what? Too soon?
So if we take on his contract, we lose comp pick value?
A very little bit.
Comp pick value is based mostly on the amount a player signs for. So, losing a guy like Rivers counts a lot, even if we didn't want him anymore, because he has a franchise QB salary.
Chase Daniel is signing for a very small amount. It is about as cheap as we can get a vet QB for. He will cost a little, but not much.
Still not sure about that 1.5m - I think the Chargers take that on.
The Chargers are big on the offset thing in contracts. Remember that was part of the Bosa holdout thing. Player who are still owed guaranteed money on their deals can have their contracts structured such that the new team (us) only picks up the portion of the remainder of the contract.
Daniel signed a 3 year deal with Det for $13.05 mill last offseason. It had singing bonus of $2.25 mill (over 3 years). However, the total amount guaranteed was $5mill. So, Daniels pro-rated bonus is $750k, meaning that there was $1.5 mill in dead money from his signing bonus. However, he got $5 mill in guarantees total. Subtract the bonus from the total guaranteed, it leaves $2.75 mill, which was likely all guaranteed salary.
Daniel's salary in Det was $1.25 mill last season, so if that was fully guaranteed, that leaves another $1.5 mill of guaranteed salary due from the last 2 years of his 3 year deal. Since the 2022 contract was voidable, it was probably all due this season. That also matches the reports of $1.5 mill that everyone is saying. The Lions have to pay him the $1.5mill no matter what, so we only have to pick up anything past that, depending on if we have offsets in the contract.
The above stuff is somewhat speculative, but seems to match what is being reported.
Cheap capable backup for Herbert.....much better than Tyrod's money now that we know who the real starter is.
Tyrod may just be starting for Texans from the looks of this mess of a scandal. Curious to see how Goodell chooses to handle benching a top 5 QB assuming it comes to that. I can't see how this isn't detrimental to the league even if only 1 case sticks. Good Karma coming back to Tyrod to make up for last years odd situation.....he might just some starting time on a team nobody would have thought he would with the star QB there.

Suddenly, starting at quarterback for the Houston Texans doesn’t sound like a bad gig to Watson after all
haha

I think it means the Chargers are paying the money -- but even if he gets $2m thats pretty good value. The Lions did waive him and he was guaranteed the $1.5 so maybe they are on the hook for it
If he was waived, Lions are on the hook for most of the money, Chargers pay NFL minimum salary. Really good move IMHO.
Kinda related but I remember thinking Tyrod would be the first Chargers qb to start at Kronkeville
but as fate turns out, it was Herbert
and iirc, Stick took a few regular seasons snaps, but they were all runs and no pass attempts
so is it accurate to say that Herbert has attempted all meaningful passes by a Chargers qb at sofi thus far?
If so, it’ll be something to watch
