The Chargers wanted to add physicality to their offensive line.
It appears they're deep in the process of doing so.
A source Saturday characterized a deal between the team and Broncos tackle-guard Orlando Franklin as "unofficially done." That sense continued to percolate around the league Sunday, as signs point to the team making it official as early as Tuesday when free agency officially begins.
The addition would be significant.
San Diego averaged 3.4 yards per rush in 2014, second lowest in the league for the second time in three years. Injuries to running backs Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead were a factor, but ultimately, too often the issues began at the line of scrimmage.
Franklin, 27, would help.
He thrived as a big-body left guard last season for the Broncos. Listed at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, he played right tackle the previous three years as a 2011 second-round pick from Miami. His switch followed a rough Super Bowl showing; he struggled in protection against the Seahawks' edge rush.
In San Diego, he could play right tackle again.
Franklin's versatility, at the very least, positions the Chargers to complete a maneuver they've entertained publicly this offseason, shifting D.J. Fluker inside from right tackle to guard, a position some teams considered him better served prior to the 2013 draft.
If that indeed is the route, Fluker can learn from someone who recently made that very transition.
There is notable history in Franklin's potential signing. When he played right tackle in Denver from 2011 to 2012, Chargers coach Mike McCoy was his offensive coordinator. In 2013, Denver signed free-agent guard Louis Vasquez from San Diego. Vasquez lived briefly with Franklin upon his Colorado arrival, a source said.
It'd now be the Chargers adding a four-year starter off an AFC West rival's offensive line.
Between left tackle King Dunlap, cornerback Brandon Flowers and tentatively Franklin, San Diego has acquired three player regarded to be among the best players at their position in free agency.Comment
