    Shack Harris

Great article on James Harris, former Chargers QB, who recently retired. I'll never forget the time when Harris, subbing for the holding-out Dan Fouts, ran a 5-yard bootleg for a TD on the last play of the game at Miami in 1977 to win 14-13. For some reason I'll never forget that play.

Harris made history as a player and an executive in the N.F.L., but to merely recite his résumé is to elide the bigotry he faced.

Nice story. He held down the fort while Fouts held out in 1977.

James was definitely a trail blazer. Black QB at a time when black QBs were pretty much non-existent in the NFL. Nice blast from the past. Thanks VB.

        Great story.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
