I agree it's been addressed somewhat, but I believe Rivers is still in wait and see mode at this point. I know some people believe this is a leverage play by Rivers to extract more money, but I think it's a leverage play to extract more resources on a supporting cast.

Heres how I look at this whole thing since this thread is still going

      1) I dont think the team is looking to trade Rivers. Nope. Telesco isnt stupid

      2) The team is just doing their due dilligence with Mariota in case he falls to 17 (not that crazy of a thought, its happened before and it could happen again). If he's there at 17, you would have to strongly consider drafting him. Telesco had an interview March 30th with MArty Caswell where he pretty much said as much. He said they scout as if they had a blank roster and that they looked at QBs last year too and no one made a big deal about it then. He also said they plan on Rivers being here long term. This was after FA began, and after Rivers said he wouldnt sign an extension now. Don't see what could have changed in 3 weeks.

      3) As for not coming out and declaring he won't trade Rivers; he's pretty much said it without saying it. He has no incentive to come out and deny it point blank. Let other teams think we're looking to make a move for Mariota. Philly is drafting a few spots behind us and we all know Chip Kelly loves his boy. If Mariota fell past the Browns at 11 you can be pretty certain that Chip would look to make a move, and if he did that means someone else would fall, someone the Chargers really want that hasn't been mentioned. (the team has had almost zero contact with Gurley which is interesting because running back is arguably the biggest hole on the team. They also haven't brought in Gordon for a private workout. For comparisons sake they also didn't meet or bring in Verrett last year)

Nice find. Many people are overthinking this, and I'm not sure why. The Chargers are not going to reveal their 'grand strategy' to anyone outside of the organization, as there is no value to do so. Speculation I guess is fine for wasting brain cycles, and all it appears to me is that the organization is trying to prepare for any contingency. As far as the players go, they will maximize what ever is most important to them, but for negotiations, they won't spill that to the Chargers.

While I agree with much of what you said, you are ignoring the fact it takes 2 to make a deal, and one party has indicated an unwillingness to get a new contract hammered out. I don't think anybody assumes the Chargers want to get rid of Rivers, it's more the perception that their hand is being forced here to protect the value of the commodity that Rivers represents. I know many people think all this talk is absurd, but there is a convergence of unusual factors here that make some of the speculation plausible.

Rivers wants to stay in SD (for 2015 at least) so he holds all the cards here because he only has one year on his contract. Would Tennessee trade the #2 pick for a one year rental?

Plus if he's serious about retiring if the Chargers try to force him to go to LA, he could do the same if they try to unload him to the Titans. What would happen if they trade him then he retires? The Chargers get Mariota and the Titans gets nothing, lol. Has that ever happened before? Would the Chargers have to compensate the Titans somehow?

The Titans GM would have inquired with Rivers agent also his own agent... If Rivers would not extend in Tenn they would not trade for him.
                Go Rivers!

If Rivers is so dissatisfied with the organization that he 'wants out,' then he hasn't been much of a 'straight shooter' during his tenure in SD. Facts: nettlesome.

It's not even draft day and people are already out on the ledge '

Usually, a comment like this happens over some unknown tackle taken in the 5th round.
