    Charger Power Rankings/Ratings entering 2021 Wk 2

With the first week done, getting better data for the numerical ratings, and also who are still posting their subjective power rankings. If you have one that I don't track, let me know. Here are the first group of Power Ranking blurbs:

    ----
Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 13 (LW 9)

It was a grind for Justin Herbert and the entire offense as expected facing Washington's solid all-around defense. But the Chargers got the job done in clutch moments with Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen and others. Brandon Staley proved he was the real deal early as their head coach with the great immediate influence on the other L.A. D.

    ----
Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 10 (LW 14)

Justin Herbert didn't put up a startling stat line, but mostly played well against an excellent Washington defense. Not that there should have been much doubt but he looks like the real deal.

    ----
Walter Cherepinsky - Walter Football 7 (LW 8)

Don't discount the Week 1 result as just a victory over the lowly Redskins. I think there's a good chance both the Chargers and Redskins finish as top-10 NFL teams this year. What Justin Herbert did on the final drive, converting third down after third down, was extremely impressive. He had a great game while battling a top-three defense.

    ----
    Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 11 (LW 12)
The official source for NFL news, video highlights, fantasy football, game-day coverage, schedules, stats, scores and more.

Justin Herbert was an absolute savage from the pocket when the Chargers needed him most on Sunday. The second-year QB delivered laser strikes for first-down completions of 17, 19, 20 and 9 yards -- all of them on pivotal third-down plays -- to seal a hard-fought 20-16 win over the Washington Football Team. Herbert wasn't perfect, committing two turnovers with L.A. in scoring range, but his incredible arm talent, combined with a gutsy self-belief in the opportunities that golden right arm gives him, separates him from so many of his peers. The Chargers, at long last, have a closer.

    ----
Pete Prisco - CBS Sports 15 (LW 20)

Winning on the road on the East Coast to open the season is a good look. The defense looked much improved from a year ago.

Brandon Staley checks the first box on his way to a potential coach of the year award.

    ----
    Russell Baxter - Fansided.com 15 (LW 15)
    https://fansided.com/2021/09/13/2021...lers-saints/6/

The Bolts made their first appearance in Landover since 2013. The Chargers grabbed an early 7-0 lead but in the third quarter fell behind, 16-13. The Los Angeles' defense came up with a huge takeaway in the fourth quarter when Washington's Antonio Gibson fumbled.

Justin Herbert's three-yard TD pass to Mike Williams proved to be the game winner. The 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year overcame one interception and threw for 337 yards.

    Matt Verderame - Fansided.com 9 (LW 11)

Justin Herbert is great, the defense has talent and the coaching was solid. It equals a good team.

    ----
Nate Davis - USA Today 13 (LW 12)
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ls/8329225002/

Pretty impressive 16-game start (4,673 passing yards and 32 TDs) for QB Justin Herbert ... and he's even winning close games now!

    ---
    ESPN 14 (LW 15)
    https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...rst-impression

    Top rookie: LT Rashawn Slater

The 13th overall pick in April's draft stood his ground against Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young in the Chargers' 20-16 win over Washington. QB Justin Herbert threw for 337 yards and Slater ranked 20th among tackles in pass block win rate. It was a solid performance for a guy who had not played in a year after he opted out of his last season at Northwestern. -- Shelley Smith

    MMQB SI.COM 13 (LW 12)

A six-point win over the WFT looks better considering the strength of Ron Rivera's defense. Justin Herbert is a wonderful quarterback but the jury is still out on the offense sans Anthony Lynn, Shane Steichen and Pep Hamilton. Which, by the way: how did the Texans (Hamilton), Lions (Lynn) and Eagles (Steichen) look Week 1, with each team scoring more than 25 points?

    ----
Bleacher Report Consensus 11 (LW 15)
    https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ntering-week-2

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking build on Justin Herbert's Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign and turn stats into wins. To do so, they needed to start notching wins on the road over quality opponents.

They did just that Sunday, coming back to down the reigning NFC East champions in Washington.

With the Chargers' ground game struggling (and lead back Austin Ekeler nursing a hamstring injury), it fell to Herbert to carry the offense. He wound up finishing 31-of-47 for 331 yards and a touchdown.

The Chargers defense played its part as well, holding a short-handed Washington team to 259 total yards and a single touchdown. But at least one of B/R's analysts remains skeptical of the Bolts as a legitimate playoff contender.

"The Chargers could be good this season, but we'll know for sure soon enough," Davenport said. "Next week, the Bolts face Dak Prescott and the buzzsaw that is the Dallas offense. Over the next month, they host the Browns and travel to Kansas City. Show me a 3-2 team after five games, and I'm on board with the Chargers as a wild-card contender."

Some of them gave the Chargers a lower ranking after that game?

            I thought the same thing.
How do you write all positives and drop them a spot or 2.
Anyone who watched saw the Bolts dominant the game, with a few weird Chargeresque calls/plays, that should have been a 15+ point win.

Keenan Allen fell down at the 5 yard line then we kneeled on the ball. That would have been another 7 pts right there.

I don't think many of these raters even watched the game. Some read like a summary of the box score or pre game injury report. I guess anyone can do these.

The ones where the ranking dropped are because they were leapfrogged. Happens a lot in the early season.

Any ranking below 12 is BS.

I read a pundit criticizing or belittling the Chargers for the through-the-end-zone-fumble, and it was clear he didn't see the game or watch the highlights, because anybody who watched that play knows it was a forward pass, and the NFL NY officiating crew had a brain fart when the let the call of a fumble stand.
