Charger Power Rankings / Ratings going into Wk 6

The first group of Rankings that post before Monday Night Football. Next set will be tomorrow around 6am Pacific:

    ----
Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 7 (LW 10)

How about Justin Herbert? What sophomore slump? He's loving the new offense and so is everyone around him, led by Austin Ekeler. Brandon Staley is your coach of the year front-runner as the Chargers are developing into a legitimate AFC powerhouse.

    ----
    Matt Johnson - Sportsnaut 3 (LW 8)
Our latest NFL power rankings provide an outlook for all 32 teams, rebuilders and Super Bowl contenders entering the offseason.

On Sunday, quarterback Justin Herbert entered the NFL MVP conversation and the Los Angeles Chargers jumped into the Super Bowl discussion. Defense is still a major problem for this team, mainly its inability to stop the run. But when opponents have no answer for your offense and you have great coaching that is willing to take chances, you win games.

    ----
Dalton Miller - Pro Football Network 7 (LW 8)

Man, I'm struggling to find a team that is genuinely more exciting to watch play football. Justin Herbert is the realest of deals. He's still young and growing mentally, but his physical skill set is rivaled only by the Alien in Kansas City, whom he beat just a few weeks ago.

Keenan Allen and Mike Williams getting to play with Herbert is borderline unfair. LA's head coach is aggressive, and the defensive scheme is cutting edge (even if they gave up 41 points today). The Chargers are not a fluke, and they absolutely have a shot to win the AFC West.

    ----
    Russell S. Baxter - Fansided 8 (LW 10)
There was quite the offensive explosion in Los Angeles. And the defending Super Bowl champions Buccaneers were dominant at home.

Off an impressive Monday night win over the Raiders, the Bolts were home for the second time in seven days and were pressed by the talented Browns. Running back Austin Ekeler had quite the outing. He fumbled twice and lost one of those drops.

However, he also ran for 66 yards and two scores and caught five passes for 53 yards and one touchdown. Justin Herbert threw for 398 yards and two TDs as the Chargers rolled up 26 fourth-quarter points.

      Tuesday early blurbs:

      ----
Barry Werner - Yahoo Sports 6 (LW 9) **writer change**
      https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-power-r...041634815.html

The Bolts are ahead of the Browns -- barely. They overcame a doublc-digit deficit, and bad kicking, to topple Cleveland. Next: at Baltimore Ravens

      ---
Walter Cherepinsky - Walter Football 8 (LW 9)

The Chargers just beat the Browns, but I wonder if that would've happened had the Browns not lost half their roster to injury. Justin Herbert has been amazing, but the Chargers' defense is a train wreck. Their inability to stop the run will be their downfall this year unless they can make a deal prior to the trade deadline.

      ----
Nate Davis - USA Today 6 (LW 8)
      https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ls/6099996001/

WR Mike Williams has impeccable timing. His salary ballooned to $15.7 million this year after the Bolts picked up his fifth-year option, but the NFL's leader in TD catches (6) should really cash in following the season, when he's scheduled to reach free agency.

      ----
      Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 5 (LW 7)
      https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-power-r...021-nfl-season

Justin Herbert Is A Savage In The Pocket. The second-year prodigy was an unstoppable force against the Browns, throwing for 398 yards with five total scores in a 47-42 win at Hollywood Park. The Bolts' usually reliable defense stumbled through its worst performance of the season, but Herbert was there to pick up the slack with his cadre of playmakers. L.A.'s 26 points in the final period were the most by a team in a fourth quarter in eight years. "To win a game like this that turns into a track meet, you have to have a superstar quarterback," coach Brandon Staley said after the victory. "And that's what he is." You know what else he is? (Please see first sentence.)

      ----
Pete Prisco - CBS Sports 5 (LW 7)
      https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/n...-keep-falling/

At 4-1, they lead the AFC West and look to be one of the best teams in the conference. Justin Herbert is the real deal. But the run defense has to be better going forward.

      ----
      Matt Verderame - Fansided.com 7 (LW 8)
Matt Verderame, 33, is a Senior Editor and FanSided's national NFL reporter. Verderame serves as an analyst on the Stacking The Box and Arrowhead Addict Podcasts. He worked previously at SB Nation, covering the NFL and Kansas City Chiefs. Verderame appears regularly on a number of radio outlets, including CBS Sports, FOX Sports Radio, Sirius XM and others. Rudy is the only movie that makes him cry.

The Chargers should win the West. They're the most complete team by a wide margin.

      ----
      Mike Florio - PFT/NBC Sports 8 (LW 8)

If they keep this up, they may actually develop a home-field advantage. Eventually.

        Early consensus rankings:

        ESPN 7 (LW 9)
Cameron Heyward is playing better than ever in Pittsburgh, Cordarrelle Patterson is hitting new heights in Atlanta and Taylor Heinicke has stepped up in Washington.

Most improved player: OT Storm Norton

How they've improved: Norton was previously in the XFL but now is the Chargers' starting right tackle because of an injury to Bryan Bulaga. Norton stumbled in his first start but has risen up the ranks, as he is currently the Chargers' No. 2-ranked offensive lineman per Pro Football Focus. He was given a game ball by Chargers coach Brandon Staley after Sunday's win over the Browns. Staley believes in the 6-foot-8 and 308-pound Norton, as does Justin Herbert, who saw Norton standing up Cleveland's Myles Garrett. He wasn't perfect, giving up a sack to the NFL's sack leader, but he has proven to be reliable. -- Shelley Smith

        ----
        MMQB SI.COM 4 (LW 6)
Arizona remains undefeated, while the Bills continue to impress. Plus, Joe Burrow catapults the Bengals into the Top 10.

The Chargers play a smart disciplined game and have an absolute alien at quarterback. On paper, at least, there's still a lot of untapped potential here. -- Albert Breer

Late group of consensus rankers: The Athletic posts tomorrow.

              ----
Bleacher Report Consensus 5 (LW 5)
It's Week 6 of the 2021 NFL season, and things are officially off the chain. The Buffalo Bills staked their claim to the title of the AFC's best team Sunday night, pounding the Chiefs on the road...

Sunday's wildest shootout took place in Los Angeles, where the Cleveland Browns and the Chargers spent the afternoon trading touchdowns in a game that featured 52 first downs and over 1,000 yards of offense.

It was the home team that had the last laugh, with Justin Herbert throwing four touchdown passes and topping 300 passing yards for the 11th time in his career. After the game, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley talked up his signal-caller.

"To win a game like this, one that turns into a track meet, you have to have a superstar quarterback to win it. That's what he is," Staley told reporters. "Like I told the team in there, the reason why he's being able to play how he's capable of playing is because he has a really good team around him."

Gagnon, on the other hand, talked up the Chargers as a team.

"It's time we start talking about the Chargers as a great team, rather than a great team of the future," he said. "A 47-point performance to beat the talented Browns? There's a decent chance they'd be unbeaten if not for a 56-yard Greg Zuerlein field goal in Week 2. I can't wait to see what Herbert and Co. have in store for the short-rested Baltimore Ravens in Week 6."

              ----
              Reddit NFLPowerRankers 5 (LW 6)

This matchup of top-seeded teams lived up to its hype and then some. Over 1000 total yards of offense and 89 combined points, 41 of which were scored in the fourth quarter alone, made for extremely entertaining football. The Chargers came out on top thanks to numerous big plays on offense from Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler, and Justin Herbert was something else. This team actually looks to be for real, and another huge test comes next week in Baltimore.

Danny Kelly - The Ringer 6 (LW 6)
The top-ranked Bills just served Kansas City its worst loss under Patrick Mahomes. Plus: Tom Brady continues to defy logic, the Cowboys look like a balanced squad, and Derrick Henry is running to the history books.
