Charger Power Rankings/Ratings entering 2021 Wk 7 (Bye Week)

First group of blurbs from Monday.

    ----
Vinnie Iyer - Sporting News 8 (LW 7)

The Chargers weren't prepared to handle the Ravens' versatile offense, which knew to attack them where they are weakest, in run defense. The Justin Herbert clunker is a reminder he still can fall victim to his inexperience, no matter how good he looked in the previous week

Our latest NFL power rankings provide an outlook for all 32 teams, rebuilders and Super Bowl contenders entering the offseason.

When your MVP candidate quarterback has his worst game of the season, it puts immense pressure on everyone else to step up. With Justin Herbert unable to compensate for his team's flaws, Baltimore walked all over the Chargers. This can be a great team but the run defense and bad offensive play-calling are troubling.

Dalton Miller - Pro Football Network 8 (LW 7)

It had to happen eventually. After a massive, emotional victory against the Cleveland Browns in Week 5, the Chargers laid a stinker against the Baltimore Ravens. They traveled thousands of miles east for a 1 PM game a week after a hard-fought win.

Every team has a bad day, and that was today for the Chargers. They weren't a tremendous run-defending team to begin with, and the Ravens are a terrible matchup in that respect. Nevertheless, it was an exciting game. The Chargers' defense either got the Ravens off the field immediately or allowed long drives for points, and there was no real in between.

    ----
    Russell S. Baxter - Fansided 9 (LW 8)
A franchise snapped an extremely long losing streak. And there have already been more overtime games this season than in 2020.

Off that scintillating 47-42 victory over the Browns, the Chargers made their way east to Baltimore in a battle of division leaders. Once again, Brandon Staley's team gave up its share of points and yards.

But quarterback Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles€™ offense managed only 208 total yards on 53 plays and owned the football for just 21:53. Herbert threw for only 195 yards and one score but was also intercepted once and sacked two times.

    ----
Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 9 (LW 6)

What was that? There isn't one thing positive to come out of that loss to the Ravens. It doesn't undo all of the positive steps the Chargers made before Sunday, but it was troubling to see a team that thinks it can contend get handled so thoroughly.

I had a feeling Justin Herbert would struggle against the blitz-happy Ravens because he didn't play as well versus the Raiders in the second half of the Monday night Week 4 game when the Raiders began heavily blitzing. I wonder if teams will adapt to this, and if so, how soon Herbert will improve against the blitz.

    ----
    Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 8 (LW 5)
Dan Hanzus provides a fresh batch of NFL Power Rankings -- with a change at the top for the fourth straight week! Meanwhile, the Titans jump into the top 10, as the Browns stumble to their lowest slot of the year.

Every team has a bad week. The Chargers hope it doesn't get worse than Sunday, a humbling 34-6 loss to the Ravens in which Brandon Staley's team was manhandled on offense, defense and special teams. Justin Herbert was virtually unstoppable in Week 5's shootout win over the Browns, but the Ravens' blitz-heavy scheme kept the second-year star uncomfortable and led to an uncharacteristically inaccurate performance. Even the Chargers' celebrated aggressiveness backfired in this one: Herbert threw a pair of incompletions on two fourth-and-short attempts in Chargers territory, with both turnovers leading to Baltimore points. It's not how they wanted to hit their bye, but the Chargers should still feel optimistic about what's to come.

    ----
Pete Prisco - CBS Sports 8 (LW 5)

That was a terrible showing at Baltimore. They hardly resembled the team that was being talked about as a Super Bowl contender.

Well, that was a reality check. The Chargers' defense is a problem right now.

    ----
Nate Davis - USA Today 9 (LW 6)
The first four teams, including No. 1 Arizona Cardinals, remain unchanged after posting Week 6 wins. But Baltimore Ravens stake claim as AFC's top squad.

After converting all three fourth-down attempts in Week 5, Bolts were 1-for-4 in Sunday's blowout loss at Baltimore. They're also now the league's worst team defending the run.

    Week 1 confidence rating: 5.4
    How it's going now: 5.7

We didn't know what to expect from the Chargers, and it's safe to say they've overachieved at 4-2, with signature wins over the Chiefs, Raiders and the Browns. But overachieving breeds more expectations, as does having a budding star quarterback in Justin Herbert. Can they hang on to first place in the AFC West and finish it out? That might depend on whether they can improve their run defense, which is currently last in the NFL and could hurt them down the road. -- Shelley Smith

    ----
    MMQB SI.COM - Consensus 8 (LW 4)
Despite a battered roster, Tampa Bay is finding ways to win, while the Titans nab a statement win over Buffalo. Plus, what to make of the bottom of the pack.

Considering what Justin Herbert and Brandon Staley had done through five games, I didn't see a scenario where the Chargers were going to be thoroughly outplayed and outcoached by anyone. But that's exactly what transpired in Baltimore on Sunday. For now, chalk it up to one of those days. -- Gary Gramling

Six weeks into the 2021 NFL season, division races are starting to take shape. The league's cream is rising to the top, and the detritus is sinking to the bottom. That may be Detroit's new nickname: the Detroit Detritus...

The Los Angeles Chargers came into Week 6 looking to make a statement by beating the 4-1 Ravens in Baltimore.

Instead, the only statement the Bolts made was "ouch."

From the opening kickoff to the final play, the Chargers were dominated on both sides of the ball. Los Angeles only had 21 yards more total than the Ravens amassed just on the ground.

While speaking to reporters after the game, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert admitted the team had no answer for what the Ravens did defensively.

"It's a lot of looks that we didn't see on film that they kind of constructed for us," Herbert said. "They did a great job of disguising their looks and bringing pressure from one way and hiding from another. Looks that they haven't showed all season, looks that we have to be better at adjusting to during a game."

It was a sobering comedown for a Chargers team that had been cruising of late. The Chargers will have two weeks to think about what went wrong (and rest injured players like wide receiver Mike Williams and linebacker Drue Tranquill) ahead of a Halloween matchup with the New England Patriots.

With expectations rising after a thrilling win against a good team last week, having your worst game of the season is not a great encore. Baltimore dominated on the ground with 187 total rushing yards and the Ravens defense held the Chargers offense to season lows in...a lot of things. This isn't a 'panic button' game by any means, but it would be a waste if the Chargers don't learn from this. They'll have plenty of time to do so, as the team now enters the bye week.

Arizona was already the league’s last unbeaten team, and another impressive performance has proved that their success is no fluke. Plus, the Ravens are rounding into form, the Raiders might still be competitive, and Carson Wentz is bouncing back.

After that stinker of a game I'm happy that they didn't drop us out of the top ten. They probably realize we're pretty dinged up as well and can use the two week vacation.

Rookie Heat Check: An offensive lineman will never win a rookie of the year award -- they are too statistics driven -- but left tackle Rashawn Slater has made a strong case for it. According to Pro Football Focus, Slater has allowed just two sacks on quarterback Justin Herbert in 266 pass- blocking snaps; both sacks came in Week 5 against the Browns and star pass rusher Myles Garrett. Hitting on back-to-back first-round picks with Justin Herbert (in 2020) and Slater sets the Chargers up for long-term offensive success.
