Charger Power Rankings / Ratings going into 2021 Wk 8

Most ratings are lower after the bye week, mostly because the Bengals leap frogged the Chargers in the Rankings.

First group are those before MNF:

Dalton Miller - Pro Football Network 7 (LW 8)

I'm so glad the Los Angeles Chargers are legitimate contenders this early into Justin Herbert's tenure as the franchise quarterback. The powder blue has always been an offseason darling, but it very rarely translated into success outside of that.

If you're starting a franchise today, there are only a select few quarterbacks you'd even consider above Herbert. They'll be one of the best teams in the NFL if they can make some slight improvements in the offseason.

The Chargers don't have a particularly difficult schedule leading up to the Bengals in Week 13. There's a very good chance they slowly rise in the NFL Power Rankings after returning from their by

The Chargers bolted into their bye after a disappointing all-around performance at Baltimore. They can do plenty of damage with Justin Herbert leading their passing game and with a solid pass defense, but they need to clean up their league-worst run defense to maintain their playoff chances.

Our latest NFL power rankings provide an outlook for all 32 teams, rebuilders and Super Bowl contenders entering the offseason.

A brutal loss to the Ravens sent the Los Angeles Chargers into the bye week on a sour note. But that time off might be exactly what this team needed. Brandon Staley has enough disruptors and playmakers to make this an average defense. Offensively, Joe Lombardi should have used the bye to improve his play-calling. If those improvements are made, Los Angeles can beat the Patriots by a touchdown-plus in Week 8.

    ----
    Russell S. Baxter - Fansided 9 (LW 9)
The slumps continue for the Dolphins, Texans and Lions. And the Bengals made a move in the NFL Power Rankings after an eye-opening win at Baltimore.

The Bolts looked like one of the better teams in the AFC after five weeks. But Brandon Staley's club was humbled last Sunday at Baltimore as the Chargers offense managed just one touchdown and the team finished with 208 total yards in the 34-6 setback. In any case, second-year quarterback Justin Herbert continues to impress for the most part and the team has learned to win games that they somehow found a way to lose most of last season.

Next group , early morning Tuesday by the individual writers:

    ----
Frank Schwab - Yahoo Sports 10 (LW 9)

The Chiefs' loss was a victory for the Chargers over their bye week. The upcoming schedule isn't too tough either (vs. Patriots, at Eagles, vs. Vikings, vs. Steelers, at Broncos) so they have a chance to solidify their place in the division along with the Raiders.

    ---
Walter Cherepinsky - Walter Football 8 (LW 8)

I had a feeling Justin Herbert would struggle against the blitz-happy Ravens because he didn't play as well versus the Raiders in the second half of the Monday night Week 4 game when the Raiders began heavily blitzing. I wonder if teams will adapt to this, and if so, how soon Herbert will improve against the blitz.

    ----
Nate Davis - USA Today 10 (LW 9)

Last time they hosted Patriots in Los Angeles, New England won 45-0. We'll assume a better outcome this Sunday at SoFi.

    ----
Pete Prisco - CBS Sports 10 (LW 8)

The Chargers had two weeks to stew over their poor showing against the Ravens. Now they get the Patriots at home, which will be fun seeing Justin Herbert against Bill Belichick.

    ----
    Dan Hanzus - NFL.com 9 (LW 8)

OK, so Justin Herbert stunk up the joint last Sunday in Baltimore, as did the rest of his Chargers teammates in a game to forget. The question becomes this: Was it simply a bad week -- or do teams now have a playbook on how to stop the Bolts? The Chargers' offense could use improvement in early-down situations. More work is needed on the defensive side, which is surprising, considering Brandon Staley's pedigree upon taking the Chargers job. Los Angeles ranked 19th in defensive DVOA heading into Monday Night Football and is one of the worst teams in football against the run. The Chargers are good -- potentially great -- but they remain under construction.

    ----
Bryan Fischer - Athlon Sports 6 (LW 6)

The AFC picture continues to get jumbled but the Chargers have the upcoming schedule to take advantage of it. We'll see if the coaching staff found any solutions to that run defense over the bye because you can bet Bill Belichick will be ready to exploit their issues on Halloween.

    ----
    Matt Verderame - Fansided.com 11 (LW 9)
The Tennessee Titans crushed the Kansas City Chiefs in Nashville on Sunday, and with the result both teams moved significantly in the NFL power rankings.

The Chargers come out of their bye with an intriguing game at home against the Patriots.

Prediction we missed: The offensive line would struggle with new members

On the contrary, they've improved early in the season despite four new starters and injuries. Center Corey Linsley, a free-agent addition from Green Bay, runs the show and first-round rookie Rashawn Slater owns the left side. Free-agent guard Oday Aboushi tore his ACL, but Michael Schofield III has filled in well. After struggling early, Storm Norton has been playing better at right tackle after having to replace injured veteran Bryan Bulaga. Their chemistry continues to get better as they provide more time for QB Justin Herbert than he got a year ago. Linsley says of his connection with Herbert: "His leadership is fantastic." -- Shelley Smith

The loss to the Ravens lingers, but I wouldn't bet against Brandon Staley after a week of self scouting. This is especially true given the Chargers soft schedule from here on out, which features just two team -- the Raiders and the Bengals -- with winning records. Even if you toss the Chiefs into the mix, this isn't anything to flinch at. -- Conor Orr

Seven weeks in, the 2021 NFL season is truly taking shape—in ways we both did and did not expect. We figured that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills would be good, ...

The Los Angeles Chargers spent their bye week trying to accomplish an unenviable task -- washing off the stink of the 34-6 beatdown the team received from the Ravens in Week 6.

After the loss, head coach Brandon Staley told reporters he's glad for the rest after a start to the season that included five games against teams that entered Week 7 .500 or better:

"I think that for me, this six-game stretch has been a really tough stretch. Our guys have earned a break. I know we didn't get to the bye feeling like we played our best ball, and it's tough no matter how you lose. Whether it's close or how it was yesterday, it's always going to be tough. What our team has done is they've always responded, no matter how the game's unfolded. Whether it's win, lose, what type of win, what type of loss, I felt like our approach has remained consistent. That's what you're hoping for as a coach, that the approach is consistent no matter what."

Things lighten up over the middle of the season. The Chargers don't play another team with a winning record until Week 13. But opponents like the New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers aren't pushovers either, and there's little margin for error in a competitive AFC West.

The demise of the Chiefs is great news for the Chargers, who can take over the division.

Early byes can be super useful to get injuries patched up and to have more time to correct mistakes before they get worse later in the season. The remaining schedule is another positive, as the Chargers appear to have passed the toughest stretch of teams they'll face. There should be no excuses for anything less than double-digit wins, as the Chargers now prepare for a Spoopyday game against the Patriot

Although I believe Chargers are a really good and well-coached team, if I were doing rankings I would not rank them in the top 10 until they've played 10 games. The team is still a mystery with so much new, and the weakness against the run is a liability. After 10 games we will have a better idea of whether they are a top-10 team.
