Maybe I have it wrong, but a $4 mill cap hit, means we would lose $4 mill of our cap space just to cut him. We have around $7 mill (I think???????). Do we want to spend it that way? Or is his salary not guareenteed and we can afford to cut him because it is only $1 mill bonus this year and next of dead space (cap hit)? It depends on the structure of the contract. I don't follow this stuff very closely, but that is balanced out by the fact that I don't think the real numbers get leaked out very clearly.

All of our RB would actually be effective if the OL actually starts to block people. Last year, none of our RB did anything much because they were getting hit in the backfield and this year in PS, they have picked up with the same shitty blocking as last year. The key to this season is going to be how well/fast/effectively the OL play.

All that being said, I am not sure Brown is the best 4th runner that can be had. Might be the best 4th RB, but that is not the same thing as being the best 4th runner.

He probably be #1 or #2 on the Cleveland Browns make this trade TT, for a 7th rounder and give them 1 million to take him and they pay the remainder of his salary

4mil cap hit means if he is on the team, that is the cap hit for him to be on the team. If we cut him, the 4 mil goes away replaced by a Deadcap space of two million which can be spread over two years. Im pretty sure that is how that works. Not exactly sure how if his salary is guaranteed, how it will work. But i dont think this years salary is guaranteed. His 4 million signing bonus was guaranteed which may already be paid out.

Here is a position-by-position look at who stays, who goes when the San Diego Chargers make their final cuts.

The Chargers still have a few players nursing injuries who will not be available when the team begins the regular season Sept. 13 against the Detroit Lions. Guard Johnnie Troutman isn’t expected back from a broken right forearm until Week 3. And outside linebacker Tourek Williams might be out until midway through the year with a broken foot.

Veteran tight end Antonio Gates likely will begin the regular season on the NFL’s suspended list while serving his four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. That means Gates will not count as part of San Diego’s 53-man roster to start the regular season.

Quarterbacks (2): Philip Rivers, Kellen Clemens

The Chargers kept only two quarterbacks last season, and the expectation is that will happen again. Brad Sorensen has shown improvement and is a practice-squad candidate.

Running backs (4): Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver, Dreamius Smith.

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco indicated the team would like to keep Donald Brown around as the team’s fourth running back, but he played only four snaps on offense in the team’s dress rehearsal against the Seattle Seahawks last week. The Chargers could save $3 million in cash by releasing Brown. Smith played well in the preseason and would give San Diego an inexpensive option to Brown for depth at running back. Brown could also command trade interest for teams looking for experienced depth at running back like the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns.

Wide receivers (5): Keenan Allen, Malcom Floyd, Stevie Johnson, Jacoby Jones, Dontrelle Inman.

It will be hard to let go of talented players such as Javontee Herndon, Austin Pettis and Tyrell Williams, but hopefully the Chargers can get someone like Herndon back on the practice squad.

Tight ends (4): Ladarius Green, John Phillips, David Johnson , Kyle Miller.

Miller makes it here to add depth to the tight end group with Gates missing the first four games. The Chargers want to run more two tight-end sets this year.

Tackles: (4): King Dunlap, D.J. Fluker, Joe Barksdale, Chris Hairston

Undrafted rookie free agent Tyreek Burwell has potential and should wind up on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Guards (3): Orlando Franklin, Johnnie Troutman, Jeremiah Sirles

Kenny Wiggins had a good training camp and could make the roster for added depth, particularly with Troutman potentially missing the first two weeks.

Centers (2): Chris Watt, Trevor Robinson

The Chargers like the versatility of these two players, who can both play guard. Michael Huey also had a strong camp and is a practice-squad candidate.

Defensive tackles (3): Sean Lissemore, Ryan Carrethers, Mitch Unrein

Damion Square made some plays during training camp and warrants a look as a guy who could add depth on the active roster.

Defensive ends (4): Corey Liuget, Kendall Reyes, Darius Philon, Ricardo Mathews

This group has more depth and guys who can push the pocket from the interior line than in years past.

Outside linebackers (5): Melvin Ingram, Jeremiah Attaochu, Tourek Williams, Kyle Emanuel, Cordarro Law

Colton Underwood flashed during exhibition play and is a practice-squad candidate. The Chargers need an extra body with Williams injured.

Inside linebackers (5): Donald Butler, Manti Te'o, Denzel Perryman, Kavell Conner, Nick Dzubnar

Not sure how you keep Dzubnar off the active roster with the way he’s played. The competition at this position helped improve the play of Butler and Te'o.

Cornerbacks (5): Brandon Flowers, Jason Verrett, Patrick Robinson, Steve Williams, Craig Mager.

Too bad guys such as Chris Davis and Greg Ducre suffered injuries; they were playing well early in camp. Richard Crawford deserves consideration for the active roster.

Safeties (4): Eric Weddle, Jimmy Wilson, Jahleel Addae, Darrell Stuckey

The Chargers have pretty good depth in the secondary and Adrian Phillips is another guy who can play. Perhaps Phillips lands on the practice squad.

Specialists (3): Nick Novak, Mike Scifres, Mike Windt

Josh Lambo did enough to get a job audition for another team or return if Novak suffers an injury.

Can't really argue with Eric Williams' roster too much.

IMO Donald Brown makes it, Dreamius is on PS. Team hedges bet. This way they have access to both during the season.

Jacoby Jones probably makes it, Inman probably makes it because neither did anything last night. However, I'd rather see what the team has in Herdon and Williams. Maybe Williams makes it for ST, and Herdon is on PS. I'd cut Reyes to make room for Williams.

Edit: I'd also go with Lambo, but the team will likely go with Novak. I'd also keep Lambo over the 4th TE.

Overall, I'd have a higher tolerance for risk this year than previous years.

Donald Brown showed me enough last night to be the 4th RB. He blocked well, and caught passes out of the backfield.

Dreamius Smith isn't bad. But UDFA RB's who aren't bad are pretty much everywhere.

Also agree that I don't think Lambo makes it...especially with Gates out 4 games, Tourek Wiliams and Troutman's injuries.

Here's what I'm hoping for. I don't like the bottom of the 53 as much as some others I guess. I had a hard time finding someone worthy of the last few spots. I don't think Tourek, Porkchops, Reyes and Stevie Williams are very good but there's not really anyone better to take over them. Maybe they'll suck it up and keep Donald Brown. At least he can pass block.

The veteran guys who didn't have significant time yesterday are pretty much decided on... they made the squad. Pretty sure that Jones will be the designated returner, so Herndon is out. Tyrell Williams showed he can play on the 2nd and 3rd teams, but that series of drops cost him a shot at the active roster. I think he'll get by waivers to the the PS. D-zub makes the team as the next UDFA to keep that streak going.

I won't be surprised if Donald Brown doesn't make it, but he has value. Steve Williams is a huge question mark for me, at time he looked really bad during the pre-season, but not as bad as Crawford. Crawford is more Bust than Boom, but can make plays. And finally, Lambo... if the special teams could consistently get to the kick returner, there is no need for a guy that just sets the starting mark at the 20. Stuckey is still nails there at gunner, but I don't know who can be a standout there. My guess is Lambo doesn't make the team, as McCoy goes with the tried and true, and trains up one of the rookies like Mager to be the other side.

If it's hard to find 53 to keep, why not keep Lambo as kickoff specialist. I'm a bit leery of releasing an accurate field goal kicker, but would be nice to take the pressure off the coverage teams.
