Anybody who remembers the Holy Roller knows that rule. You can't purposefully bat the football.

The refs are paid professionals at the highest level of the world's biggest moneymaking sport, they damn well better know the rule. If I'm a Detroit fan I'm pissed off right now.

Yeah, the official had a brain fart. The rule wasn't the holy roller though... no one is allowed to intentionally bat the ball out of the endzone, but the call was nonreviewable.

Nobody is allowed to intentionally bat the ball - doesn't matter the part of the field. It's exactly the Holy Roller. That's where the rule comes from.
