I think it's maybe scheme related.
You're asking these big maulers to try to play nimble in a zone blocking scheme and I wonder if that has something to do with it. Whether they physically or mentally cannot do it/grasp it, I think it is stretching them thin and exposing them to injury.
Why not just let the big maulers....maul? I think a lot of it simply boils down to the other team is just inflicting more physical pain on us than we are on them. I think somebody (Steve?) pointed out that most of Gordon's big plays in college came from a zone blocking scheme....well he's a big boy and if he's as talented as we think/hope, he would have to adjust. I'm not suggesting we change our entire blocking scheme mid-season as I imagine that is probably close to impossible, but I feel like you also need to put your players in the best position to not only succeed but also stay healthy.
Now I could be totally wrong and I am open to anybody correcting me, but this is just my observation. Especially when an ENTIRE unit is decimated by injuries...there has to be some unifying theme. Unless you just want to blame it on bad luck. Every. Single. Year.
