Who Will Be Herbert's Long-Term Backup?

Billy Volek was not good enough to be a full-time starter. But he found his niche as a backup, a role in which he excelled when he was called upon. You may recall Volek coming in for Rivers in the 2007-08 divisional playoff game against Peyton Manning and the defending SB champs Indy Colts. Volek led the Chargers on a game-winning scoring drive late in the game that put the Chargers in their only AFC Championship game of this century.

Who is going to be Herbert's Billy Volek? Let's not kid ourselves, if they have to rely on Chase Daniel in relief of Herbert even for a few series, there is not chance Daniel is going to do what Volek did in relief of Herbert.

Knock on wood...hopefully we never have to find out what the team would do if Herbert can't go for whatever reason. If he were lost for the year, the season would be over. But if Herbert has to come out of a close game, or has to miss a few games, I think it's foolish not to have a backup who gives the Chargers a chance to win in Herbert's absence. Daniel is not that guy. I know they like having him in the locker room to help Herbert prepare, but if they like him in that role, why not hire him as QB coach? Because IMO he's not really a back up QB. If he were a veteran who had a lot of playing experience, then maybe. But he's not even that. Herbert has more playing experience than Daniel.

I wonder if they have an eye on Stickman as the real back up, a QB who gives the offense a chance in Herbert's absence. I guess that would explain why they keep keeping him around.

For this team to be complete as a consistent title contender as Herbert enters the prime of his career, I think they have to find a legit back up QB, a legit player who can be Herbert's Volek. And there are some possible, suitable candidates, including some recent 1st round draft choices who have played well at times but have not been consistent enough to be starters. These include:

Daniel Jones. He's going to have one more season in NY to prove he's a legit starter. But I doubt he's going to turn it around and suddenly be that guy. He seems to me destined to be a career backup. But he has talent and the measurables and has had his good moments in the NFL. But he's not consistent, and probably never will be, but as a backup where the pressure is not constantly on to be a world beater every week, he might be suited for that role.

Sam Darnold. Same as Jones. Has the talent and has had his moments. But not consistent enough to be a full-time starter. I see him as a career back up as well.

Jared Goff. I think he's going to end up a career back up as well. I think the Lions will draft a QB in 2023 and Goff will never have a starting job again. He would be a great back up QB.

Other possibilities are Mitch Trubisky, Josh Rosen, or, yes, even Drew Lock.

I would not rule out guys like Baker Mayfield or Jimmy GQ as possibilities a few years down the road if/when their opportunities to be starters have disappeared.

Agree. I don't sense any anxiety in Staley and I think he likes the idea if training our own.

        Stick

Looking at his college stats I always thought that Stick was a credible contributor. Perhaps he was above average for his college division but did not have high-value opponents. I don't remember seeing him play in any Charger games other than pre-season so for me, it's difficult to judge his play in a real NFL game.

"All-time winningest quarterback in FCS history with a 49-3 record as NDSU's starter over four seasons, surpassing the 48 wins by NDSU's Brock Jensen...Part of five Missouri Valley Football Conference championship teams and four NCAA Division I FCS national championships, including two as the starter his junior and senior seasons...Starting QB in 14 of 15 NCAA playoff games in his four seasons...Completed 165 of 267 passes for 2,233 yards and 23 TDs with seven interceptions in the postseason...Also rushed 127 times for 723 yards and 12 TDs in the playoffs, averaging 5.7 yards per carry...Finished as NDSU's career record holder for passing yards (8,693), passing touchdowns (88), total offense yards (11,216), yards per game (203.9), yards per play (7.97) and touchdowns responsible for (129)...Ranked second in school history for passing attempts (980), completions (598), and efficiency rating (159.5)...MVFC career record holder for rushing yards (2,523) and rushing touchdowns (41) by a quarterback..."
Thank God for morons. Without them who would the rest of us have to blame things on?

When Stick has had the opportunity to play with first-teamers on the field, he's looked pretty decent. Remember that TD pass he fired into Palmer last preseason just as he was going out of bounds? He also threw a beautiful bomb to Guyton on one play. Normally Stick is stuck playing with guys who aren't good enough to make an NFL roster, and it holds him back. He's probably the best running QB out of the three, even better than Herbert. So I would have no problem getting behind Stickman. I just want somebody competent behind Herbert. There is no take on Stick, so if he did have to enter a game, or start one or two, he would have an advantage.

Stick soundly outplayed Daniel last PS. I was surprised and did not expect that as the year before he was horrible

I think there might be a chance that Daniels gets cut if Stick outplays him. If so, I don’t any reason to keep 3 QBs if there are other players you would worry about getting picked up if cut. Stick being in his 2nd year of the O and Herbert’s brain to pick will take Stick further than it will Daniels.

I would much rather keep a Joe Reed, Deane Leonard, Ja’sir Taylor, Stone Smartt, Leddie Brown, Breiden Fehoko.

I have always been a fan of Stick's intangibles. He has IT. Now he is not going to start here, maybe not for any team over his career but I think he remains a very capable backup. If he had t fill in for Herbert for a game or two I would not be worried. I like his game.

People give Volek too much credit here. He wasnt that great a player, just had a good series. Mediocrre backup imo.

As for another after this season, Rosen is a bust. No Thanks. Goff would be too expensive and think he will get a shot somewhere.

Im still on the Heinicke backup wagon. Gardner Minshew is a gamer as well and had decent stats on a shitty team. Guys got 41 TDs and only 12 INTs in his career.

Darnold and Jones have been crap and might cost more than the two i mentioned.

Funny, i mention those two (Heinicke and Minshew) and then i came across this article lol.

                      https://www.profootballnetwork.com/t...terbacks-2022/

Ranking the NFL’s top backup quarterbacks in 2022

With the statuses of Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo in limbo, neither quarterback will be featured on this list. Mayfield is almost assuredly never playing another down for the Cleveland Browns again, while Garoppolo, whether he stays with the San Francisco 49ers or is traded elsewhere, is likely to be a starter this season.
                      1) Taylor Heinicke, Washington Commanders

Of all the teams in the league, the Commanders might have the smallest divide between their No. 1 and No. 2 QBs. Heinicke, who went 7-8 as a fill-in starter last season, played relatively well in a tough situation. Heinicke battled through his first shot at legitimate NFL playing time as the top players around him dealt with injury and COVID-19 woes.

Despite all of that, he still threw for 3,419 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. If Carson Wentz were to suffer an injury this season, the Commanders should feel confident that Heinicke can pick up the slack.
                      2) Gardner Minshew, Philadelphia Eagles

Like Heinicke and Wentz, the divide between Minshew and Jalen Hurts doesn’t seem super wide. Minshew was able to win an important matchup against the New York Jets last season while Hurts was sidelined with an ankle injury. That victory actually helped the Eagles spark an impressive run when Hurts returned to the lineup.

Minshew might not be an ideal starting QB, but he is clearly capable of leading an offense when called upon, especially with weapons like DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown, and Dallas Goedert to aid him in his efforts.

I have a close friend, a Pastor, who just came down with Covid fror the second time. He had it about a year ago too. That makes me think it's still wise to keep three QB's on the roster.

As for who's the most apt to help us if Herb misses a game or two, I like Stick.
