How many sacks will the Raiders get on Herbert? How many sacks will the Chargers get on Carr?
After the game my thoughts are this. We won the battles in the trenches. We give up 63 rushing yards, record a total 6 sacks on Carr, harass him with pressure all day, force 3 Interceptions.
This team has a hell of a time putting their opponents away. It's maddening. Every game *has* to be a nail biter, it would seem. Again (and again and again): Great, entertaining football...for the fans of the other 31 teams in the League.

That Herbert rolls out right with the tight end off play action is a bread and butter play that more often than not doesn't work.
He caught 3 of 4 but that drop was huge.

Lots of observations:
* Guyton was targeted just once, and was a non-factor.
* Mike W. was targeted 4 times, made 2 catches (for 10 yards). The Bolts didn't throw deep very often.
* DeAndre Carter is the guy who took over for Keenan Allen when Allen left the game with a hamstring tweak.
* I can see why Telesco signed punter J.K. Scott. 49 yard average, and outstanding hang time, which forced fair catches and prevented Vegas having opportunities to rack up return yardage. .
* Josh Kelley had some really good, tough running yards.
* Zander Horvath got some key snaps, and scored a TD. I had really been hoping that Bolts would find ways to let him do what he does best.
* The run defense? Didn't look a whole lot different from a year ago. Waaaay too porous. Still.
* The pass defense didn't look all that improved either, although the sacks and INTs were something I hope to see a lot more of.
* Nassir Adderley? Pretty much invisible.
* Asante Samuel? Tested regularly, got beat some (was covering D. Adams, after all), but overall played well.
* Trey Pipkins? Herb wasn't sacked, so Pip was clearly not *bad*. But he did allow some pressures and force Herb to roll from the pocket.
* Herb looked good. Real good. Not great, but good. Damn good. Didn't turn the ball over. 26 of 34, 279 yards, 3 TDs.
* Derwin was a force. Really good to see him disrupting.
* Ekeler was given very little room to run, and took a beating. If the plan was for Kelley, Michel and Spiller to shield him from the abuse of running between the tackles, it wasn't effective today.
* Nice job by Dustin Hopkins, kicking touchbacks. That prevented the risk of the Bolts' kick coverage unit getting scorched. Same with JK Scott forcing fair catches.
* I was surprised to see Kenneth Murray get as much playing time as he did. I interpret that as a sign that Staley believes Murray can fit in.
* The Bolts failed on both of their 4th and short attempts, and it wasn't even particularly close. This area has not been fixed yet.
* DeAndre Carter looked CLUTCH. 3 catches on 4 targets, 64 yards and a TD.
* Tre' McKitty had a fumble (out of bounds) a penalty, and 3 catches on 4 targets for 24 yards.Last edited by Ghost of Quacksaw; 09-12-2022, 03:05 AM.

Each week is a new matchup. We are going to need to light it up against KC.
Too early for a Chiefs Week thread?
Liked Kelley a lot, very solid. Carter is the new Secret Weapon. Herbie is Herbie. Looking forward to this awesome D attacking Mahomes, and our O to shine.

Popper just put up Staley's post game presser.
There is some detail provided. We play modern Harball.

It was like we were back in the Anthony Lynn days. Stupid running play after stupid running play today, especially on first downs. The running game was not working and being at the 2 yard line on first down presented the perfect opportunity to play action pass and move the ball because people expect running plays to be called when a team is backed up.
Generally speaking, we cannot run the ball when people are expecting us to run the ball. The series at the every end of the game was an exception to that general rule. We saw that problem over and over again today, saw it last year and saw it two years ago. We can run with some success when we cross up our opponents. We are not a running team. Running plays should be used as an occasional change of pace type play.Last edited by Guest; 09-11-2022, 05:51 PM.

But Herbert hardly missed a beat throwing to new or backup receivers. There is a lot of room to improve, and like I said after the Buffalo games, no one wins a championship on week 1. Most of the time (but not all) the teams that look great early in the year-end up fading late in the year. The teams that tend to make a lot of the really deep playoff runs usually build on what they do early and get better over the season.
I agree, there was a lot of negative stuff in this game, but I also think there was enough good stuff to build on. I am pretty happy where we are. But the next step is building and getting better week by week.
Should be a well oiled machine already.
Our division games are always close so not sure why some are mad. We beat the freaking Raiders who knocked us out of the playoffs.....and who even needs that to want to beat them?
