Ryan doesn't have a background in the DL. His background is as a LB coach. Rex is the former DL coach.
Not everything in NO is his fault. They have been rebuilding their offense at the same time lacking the sort of players to make his scheme work well. He is also a poor fit in NO, because they keep putting his D in horrible game situations and don't do anything to cover up for any of the weaknesses.
That being said, I wouldn't hire him. He has a reputation of running a very complex D, and not simplifying things even when the players make a lot of mental mistakes. He has never coached a top D, but has gotten his reputation because he usually had defenses that overachieved to a certain degree and could keep the team competitive, even when the offenses sucked. He's not a horrible coach, I just don't think he is a good fit for us.
