Anybody remember this game? Houston came out with 6 DB's game plan...Fouts kept throwing into it instead of running the ball. Dumb coaching that day.
December 29, 1979, the day Chargering may have been invented as a verb.
San Diego, under Don Coryell, his second year and first full season, had the best team in football. Period. It did.
So this was more than a defeat. To this day, it remains almost impossible to comprehend.
The Air Coryells had gone 12-4 — they would not have the NFL’s best record again until 2006 — and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. So, after a bye, they met the Oilers here in the Divisional Playoff Game and were prohibitive favorites — for more than one reason.
First of all, they were good, leading The League in passing, No. 2 behind Pittsburgh in total offense, and for once had a defense ranked in the top 10.
Secondly, the Oilers came in without Hall of Fame tailback Earl Campbell (the consensus MVP, with 1,697 rushing yards and 19 TDs), starting quarterback Dan Pastorini, and top receiver Ken Burrough (who did make a second-half decoy cameo).
Final score: Houston 17, San Diego 14.
You can say Jets over Colts in Super Bowl III was the biggest upset, and it was a pip, but Baltimore didn’t play a New York team without Joe Namath, Matt Snell and Don Maynard.
