I don't have the time, currently, to read the article. But what I recall is that for the AFL to get the initial financing they needed they had to have a presence in the biggest markets. Once the financing was finalized they had the ability to relocate teams where they could draw fans, which was much more important than TV to keep a team solvent back then. The Chargers left LA after their first year. The Dallas Texans left a couple of years later and became the KC Chiefs.
