Beathard was hired as general manager of the Chargers in 1990 and immediately brought hope to a city hungry for a winner. In just his third season in San Diego, the organization won its first AFC Western Division championship in more than a decade and by 1994, the team made its first Super Bowl appearance.
One of my favorite GM's & got us to the big dance in '94
Respects to the family

I wanted to chime in and pay my respects. I grew up in Leucadia. I used to surf with Bobby Beathard quite a bit at Beacons -- along with Tim Flannery (those were the days). I will never forget he would constantly ask me if I had tickets or wanted tickets to a game. When he found out I had tickets for a game, he would give me field passes. One game -- against the Bengals -- I was on the field before the game started and got to throw the football to Darnay Scott and Jeff Blake.
When I went to Cal Poly, he made it a point to take me out to dinner when he came up to scout players. I kicked myself for never bugging him about an internship -- he would have made it happen.
As an aside, he was also an amazing bodysurfer. I remember him winning a competition in 1992 or 1993.
My point: forget his work as a GM -- he was a wonderful person. I've thought about him often as I have gotten older. He will be missed.
