Mike Williams had 11 catches in 10 games his rookie year. WRs usually take time and this group has trusted vets ahead of him.
Welcome WR Quentin Johnston , TCU (Round 1, #21)

Not going to bail on QJ after one game...but one is left wondering why we didn't go for the game breaking speedster (STILL a glaring need) vs the guy who was doing preseason interviews talking about having to improve on his dropped balls.
Flowers and Addison both had respectable debuts, with multiple catches for 60+ yds. Addison was the only one to score a TD.
Smith-Ngijba and QJ were both quiet in week 1.
Flowers and Addison are starters. QJ and Smith-Ngijba are not. QJ played 22 of 81 offensive snaps, 27 percent.

I get that he was drafted as an eventual replacement for KA and/or MW, but after watching Tyreek yesterday, I am envious that we don't have that kind of speed on this team. The drops are also a concern, and this was identified even back during draft day. That fact that he's talking about it even after preseason just doesn't inspire a ton of confidence early on.ESPN Screename: GoBolts02

But the key is making sure any guys we bring in, even if they have speed can play. Hill was probably faster as a rookie, before he learned to run routes. Now, with route running, he is the best WR in football. It's also worth noting that KC offense hasn't really lacked production since Hill left, even though they are not nearly as fast as they used to be.
Fast guys without route running are like Jimmy Oliver and Johnny Barnes. Former chargers who had plenty of speed, but were shitty players who did nothing for us because they were drafted for speed alone, and they never developed.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with super fast guys, but just being fast makes you a sprinter and not a football player. And plenty of GM's have been fired for getting too excited about speed and forgetting the guys can't play. Al Davis ran his team into the ground.Last edited by Steve; 09-18-2023, 04:20 AM.

This is a 5th round rookie playing in his first NFL game. Our 1st rookie should be able make plays like this, right? I want to see QJ running some routes Sun in Tenn.

Or just send him deep a few times per game - give Herbert a bit more protection - not this five wide so five blockers crap
I am okay if he doesn't have the numbers that say Addison or Flowers have
what will not make me is happy is if they don't try to get him the ball because of Allen, williams and Palmer

But from what I have seen - Mike Williams and Josh Palmer are not doing enough to warrant getting snaps ahead of QJ at this point
That stupid end around with Williams -who called that nonsense. He is big and not nimble or quick. That should have been a QJ play or Davis

I’m not feeling it with Quentin Johnston. He’s not making tough catches. Herbert is not throwing it to him. Puka Nucua is a stud for the Rams. Over 100 yds again today. He scored the winning TD in OT. He’s a freaking 5th rnd pick. He doesn’t have the speed or other measurables QJ has. Many other rookie WRs are making plays for their teams. Somebody on the Chargers WR corps needs to step up and fill the hole created by Mike Williams’ absence. It should be QJ.
