I know obviously we’re keeping both, just asking hypothetically if you had a gun to your head.
I think they will keep Keenan next year. He’s too good not to.

Why? He has 4 catches for 24 yards and 4 runs for 61 yards in 4 games played. The 51 yard run was nice, but the other 3 runs netted 10 yards.Originally posted by PhilaBoltster View PostYou can only keep one: Quentin Johnston or Derius Davis. Who are you keeping?
I’ll take Davis.
Reality is neither DD or QJ are very polished route runners at this point and aside from the one run yesterday, the coaching staff has not been able to unleash either at this point.

I’m basing it on what my eyes tell me. I think QJ is going to have trouble getting open and catching the ball at this level.

I didn't like the QJ pick but I'm nowhere near writing him off.
What I've noticed about WR's is very few if any have a polished route tree coming in.
From that point it's up to the coach to either utilize the player to what they know how to do from college
or bring the player along slowly to learn the pro game before giving them playing time.
In QJ's case his development track got sped up due to the MW injury.
He has a reputation for drops at this point. The good thing about that is it's correctable, it will just be frustrating watching the growing pains of him getting better in this area.
Jerry Rice, Davante Adams, Chase were guys who had trouble early on catching the ball.
I'm expecting growing pains this season and hopefully he starts flashing why he was drafted in the 1st round down the stretch and makes the leap in year 2.

Getting open is not an issue for QJ. Against the Vikings Johnston created 6.14 yards of separation per route run, according to Next Gen Stats. That’s more than double the league average of 2.94 yards.Originally posted by PhilaBoltster View PostI’m basing it on what my eyes tell me. Whether he can catch the ball, if the team is calling plays for him or if Herbert has enough chemistry to trust him are all different questions.

I think its really important for some context here in regards to using stats. Separation stats for routes never really tells the whole story. It only accounts for catches/incompletions. Just a microscopic sample size for QJ against the Vikings. 3 routes created that lofty number. It was 1.9 vs the Raiders. Same 3 targets. And they were focused on him. They were not playing him backed off 14 yards. He is not lining up 1vs 1 man and beating guys vs the vikings. Vikings were in a 4 man picket style D backed off like 14 yards most of the game...trying to apply pressure and force Herbs to get the ball out quickly. I just really feel that when someone is using really minimal stats to promote a player...that we see it for what it really is. You cant say that those 3 routes mean he doesnt have a problem separating. My take at least.
Getting behind this look is not hard...if you are fast. There is nobody there jamming. lol

He isn't having any trouble getting open. The biggest reason he's not getting a lot of targets is because Herbert is not throwing to him. There's a reason for it I'm sure, probably drops at practice and in the preseason.Originally posted by PhilaBoltster View PostI’m basing it on what my eyes tell me.
