As was pointed out earlier in this thread, this thought is misguided. We have 4 players up front that are 24 years old or younger and only 2 over age 30.

The entire defense was just plain awful.

I was willing to move on from Bosa and or Mack for a reason -- specifcally Bosa. He is overpaid for what he produces. Not saying there was a market for him but if there was - they should have traded him for a 3rd round pick

Bosa is the guy who will get 4 sacks in the game you win 31-10 but when you need one play - he will not make it. He will jump offsides or commit a penalty.

I'm at the point where I'd cut them both loose after this season and just eat the $34 million and go fresh. We'd have what $38 million to spend on other players next season. Makes no sense to retain them at all as Bosa seems to have lost his burst. Lets just say this is a wake up call for the players to respond next week or make plans to do something really radical.

mack, bosa, SJD, Johnson, Fox, hendricks, and K9 are the front seven, only K9 is under 25...

Tuli is 20
Hinton is 22
Matlock is 23
Ogbonnia is 23
Rumph is 24

At linebacker, 4 are 25 or under:

Murray is 24
Henley is 23
Neiman is 25
Obbongbemiga is 25

Bosa, Fox and SJD are 28

Only Hendriks, Johnson and Mack are over 30.

My point was age is not the issue as most of the guys are young. If you want to say they suck, aren't the right players, are coached bad - that is a completely different topic.

And again, I don't think it DL is old either. Many young guys on it. DL wasn't the problem unless you are counting the Edge rushers. And only Mack is older and he played better than Bosa.

why are you glossing over the fact that the old guys played almost the whole game? aside from K9, which under 25 guys in the front seven played more than a handful of snaps?

That is not the question I was answering. I was answering this from the very first post in this thread along with the continuing discussion about how old our defensive line and front 7 are:

we must have one of the oldest groups in the NFL and defense is all about having guys get after it, you need a lot of young guys to have a strong defense

We don't have close to the oldest front 7 in the league. They have brought in an infusion of young players. Why Staley plays the vets so much and doesn't give the younger players more time is a different question.

We play a read-and-react scheme that asks a lot of the DL. The newer players have a lot of different techniques and it takes time for them to learn how to play the scheme. Older players do that more easily.
