Sounds like it was still a bad deal. Waiver wire won that trade.
Prediction: Correct: Chargers CI fails miserably. Fail: Team stays in San Diego until their lease runs out in 2020. (without getting new deal done by then) . Sig Bet WIN: The Chargers will file for relocation on January 15.
Many of us are not all that thrilled with Clemons as a backup. I still think he is one of the better backup QB out there, but that really just means there aren't really enough starters, let alone solid backups.
However, if Mike Bercovici shows much, if anything, do we trade Clemons to the Cowboys? They are desperate for a backup, and there might be a real option later on for them. The downside is that Clemons gives us a better chance to win than Bercovici. But who is kidding who? We don't have a chance to win games if Rivers goes down. None. We would need a strong run game and defense (which I wouldn't count on right now), and a bunch of receivers who can all make plays.
If we try and trade Clemons now, we have a chance to get something. There are guys with potential out there, who as camps start getting on, will be available to the Cowboys. If we send him soon, there is at least a chance of getting a late round pick. If we wait, they aren't going to spend a pick to have a guy come in late unless it has PR value to them. The Cowboys don't need a backup, the are not a playoff caliber team, and they have no chance to win if Romo goes down, but if there is a chance to add a pick, it is worth at least considering.
I disagree... we need good backups in every position.. even at the QB position.
I'd trade him but doubt we'd see better than 5-7 rounder in return on him. He has value because he has performed as a starter and wouldn't be shell shocked. He just doesn't have upside to warrant much value. If Rivers goes down we are screwed. Kellen wouldn't stop that train wreck.
I would take a 5th rounder. I doubt anyone would offer more than a 7th for Clemens.
Our 2nd QB isn't gonna help if Rivers is out for several games.
However he can keep us in a game if Rivers misses a few series, or maybe make one start to bide time.

Thats what I think, I think he is our Billy Volek.

I think we would only see a 5 if we gave them Kellen and a 7. Straight-up. Probably a 7, 6 if they were out of options.
Bringing it back on topic. Camp reports say Clemens sucks too. Trade him if you can.

Who trades for a backup qb without starter potential?
Name a backup who has starter potential? I am sure there are a few, but mostly for teams without an established starter. And only on teams with stronger rosters.
Clemens was okay today, though way too many of this throws were high. The other two QBs did absolutely nothing to think Clemens job as the backup QB is in jeopardy.
Give him a full week of practice and a game plan with the starters, I think Clemens would be better then we saw today. A cleaner pocket would certainly help his throwing high (so he can really step into his throws). But he is not going to be able to win games as a starter unless our D gets a lot better.
Mettzengberger is similar to Charlie Whitehurst. Gives everyone the warm fuzzies in practice because he throws a great looking ball and prepares like a pro. Get him in a game, and he has all kinds of trouble vs a defense, which is kinda the point. No one would trade for him, because everyone knows we aren't going to carry 3 QB.
To me, the bigger issue is that the Cowboys need to appease their fan base and are vulnerable to making a bad trade. Not bad enough to give up a good pick, but to give up something.
