this is great news for a lot of teams around the NFL and of course for the players themselves, the guys hitting FA this season will become the envy of the guys that hit it last year...
As far as how all this affects the chargers? it takes a bit of pressure off in the coming days from making any "panic" type moves...right now with a classic restructure of two guys (Derwin and Herbert) plus cutting Kendricks will get the chargers to within 2.7mil from being compliant...from there you can do a modest extension for KA and create a big chunk of anywhere between 11-16 mil in cap space depending on how long they extend KA for...
after that they can continue to create cap space by dealing with Mack, Bosa, and MWs any which way they want, trade, cut, extend, whatever, they can do a bunch of shit and the cap is projected to go up another 30 plus mil next season...plus keep in mind that the 25 mil in dead cap that the chargers are carrying right now comes off the books in 2025..."The author assumes no responsibility or liability for any errors or omissions in the content of this post. And that $14 million extra cap space is this year and next year and every year after. We are aging our way out of cap trouble. Restructure the old guys as you’re training the young guys.
Just move on, there’s nothing to see here.
We are going to be highly competitive this year.Last edited by Formula 21; 02-23-2024, 12:10 PM.Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
Let’s win one for Mack.

He was factoring the draft class and 53 player roster. Roster is at 49 players so 53 would cost 3m moreOriginally posted by jox g View Post
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/los-angeles-chargers/cap/ Says Bolts are -20.8 Million right now!
The draft class will cost an additional 7+m
So though OTC shows the figure at 22, Popper is adding another $10 so eventually the Chargers will need a minimum of $32m in cap space --
Popper is NOT including the practice squad or in season fund

They need 22.5m of space as of today
kendricks 6m
Allen can easily be 16m
and release Parham
and you are 22.5m and do not need to touch Herbert or Derwin
Second, in bold, as long as it happens by the third day of the league year -- they do not have all offseason unless they want to pay out bonuses
and they will have a very good idea if there is even trade value for any of the players you mention with the combine nexgt week end

why wouldn't you restructure Herbert and Derwin? this is expected of big contract guys that the team still wants longterm, everyone does this, Patrick mahomes gets restructured every year in KC, why would Herbert be any different and the players like doing it because they get money up front...a simple restructure of both guys opens up like 13mil in cap space...honestly I can't imagine the team not doing it especially now with the new revenue figures coming in, the cap will once again go up like 30 mil again next year, we could see our first 60-65mil per year QB in the next 12 months...Originally posted by Bolt4Knob View Post

cmplxgal usually knows all this stuff...but my understanding was that only the top 51 players on the roster in terms of money count against the cap...not sure where this practice squad shit is coming from, the in season money is a real thing because it gives flexibility picking up street FAs if needed to fill in for injured guys and such, but as for the PS, I'm pretty sure that shit just comes out of the owners pocket and not part of the cap?Originally posted by dmac_bolt View Post

I do not think they need to get money from Derwin or Herbert. The Chargers can get cap compliant with extending Allen and releasing Kendricks - at this point would be $983k under the cap. So priority 1 - checked off.Originally posted by Fouts2herbert View Post

At that point - they can operate the league year:
Priority #2: What do with Mack, Bosa and MW. If they release MW and June 1, Bosa, they are now $43m under the cap without touching Mack, Herbert or James.
43m under would leave about $25m in free agency without pushing anymore money to the future
IF, you still need money, you can always circle back to James and Herbert but I am not sure the chargers will be big players in free agency. Too many holes to fill
As I said earlier - if I am keeping both Mack and Allen, with the new money, I am only extending Allen, letting Mack play out his contract.
