Exactly. If he stinks, you release him

When Slater is extended, will it be this off season, and how much will his cap hit expected to be?

guaranteed 2024 salary means we can't cut him for a cap benefit. But trading him and his salary goes to the new team. his signing bonus wasn't that big, but that would still hit the CAP (post-June its not that much spread across 24-25)

All that said - don't trade him. he's baked into the cap plan, no need to change it. lets go into 2024 with something we have not had in 2 decades: depth at OT. Is OT the #1 offense priority or is it not? Where are all of my Alt-fans to support me on this? IF you wanted Alt, how do you not want a decent backup?

^ This...and Trader Joe likes depth...hopefully we can sign Simmons or at least another FA FS at a reasonable cost...don't want to go into this season counting on JT WoodsWhiffy at FS...

And im also responding to those who keep mentioning Simmons as one we should sign. Its just a dream.
It will be more than $18M. $12M is more than enough for rookie contracts and PS players with some exceptions do not count toward
the cap. They are paid weekly and only count against the cap if brought up to the active squad. We have plenty of room to sign 3 vets and
            then some.

We do have to be careful about the next few years as Herbert's cap hit becomes huge. But for this year we have no cap issues at all and
in fact are in better shape than 27 other teams.

Yeah it’s a money business, but I think some players want a coach who can elevate them. When we signed this dude to coach this team, my first thought was who can he bring. And that’s what we have seen. Listen to the rookies excitement this year. Yes they are all excited, but there is a want in their voice that’s the difference. I am just waiting to see what this version of the team looks like.

The smart thing to do is let Pip play in Roman downhill system and see if he can earn the RG spot. I doubt it. At same time if coaches have him clearly as the best option for swing tackle it would be a mistake to cut him. Trade should be an option if someone gives up a pick worth it. Not sure what value that would be to Hortiz. For me, Sayler can kick out to RT. McFadden can play RG, if an OT went down and Pip wasn't here anymore as swing tackle. That extra Pip money save 2.5m could go to a better offer for Simmons.

If we want Simmons we can go out and get him. No need to cut anybody. We are in a great cap position for 2024.

We dont really have that much and was just mentioned a few posts back from what i quoted. So...once again.....rookie pool (cap space only here) is somewhere around 11-12 mil......not sure which. Alt's cap alone will be 6 mil. Someone can correct on that to be more accurate. Have to set asside a pool for PS players and in season injuries and then we end up with around 8 to 10 mil.

Im thinking we will sign more than just one player before we head to TC or even after depending on who gets released that we like,.... so i doubt they are going to spend 6 mil of that 8 to 10 on one player....and FS at that.
I would like to sign a veteran safety....doesnt have to be Simmons...there are other solid and cheaper options out there...maybe a veteran WR like Zay Jones. I know we just drafted 3 WRs but none of them have proven a thing in the NFL and neither has QJ.

I saw a stat on Zay Jones - -for receivers with 250 catches in the NFL - he has one of the lower yards per catches at 10.6 yards per catch, For the record, Renfrow is slightly higher than Zay Jones on a ypc basis

MVS - fewer catches- and maybe more drops - gets almost 17 ypc

As for safety -- there are cheaper options to be sure - be nice to get a bit of depth back there unless JT Woods is balling out in offseason workouts

I would expect we will only be signing those vets who later realize that they won't get $$ now. Them and their agents will wait. The Chargers will want to see what we got in hand. Patience.

It is that time of year when teams are at that post-draft process:
                          minicamps
                          OTAs
                          figuring out what they have
                          than summer break

But come middle to late July, players will want to get one more paycheck and teams will start to identify where they need depth. Like you said, patience as it could be a few months
