Not really, why does he need to take a pay cut? He actually performed very very well last season. His market value is what it is. If they talked to him about an extension without a pay cut then I’m sure his agent would have listened.

what if you just killed it at your job are the best at what you do in your company and one of the best in the industry and your new boss who you know just negotiated a top salary just came to you and said the company is hemoraging money and wants you to take a pay cut. You’re going to be disrespected and tell him to kick rocks. If they fire you then they have to deal with the giant hole you just left them and their stake holders should be ready to hold them accountable if they don’t perform as well as expected.

But if you look at the WR market that Allen was in, and I think that excludes Ridley and Gabe Davis but includes Lockett with Seattle and Mike Evans from Tampa - the range was the mid to upper teens for Allen. Lockett was in the mid teens and Evans was at 22 AAV

Allen was set to make $23m this year, nothing guaranteed. Chargers were probably in that 17-19 range; Allen in the Evans range

I didn't say he was bad, I said he isn't explosive and that matters. He isn't worth the money and is only going to continue to slow down. How long do you want to keep him? 35 years old? So you want to waste Heberts prime years with an old WR that at any point will break down?

Uh what? Yes I want to give Herbert his favorite weapon and 100+ reception 1000 yard receiver. I would have worked on an extension and kept him because he’s really good. He doesn’t have to be a number 1 the whole time he’s actually at his best in the slot and which he could do for years to come.

Ummm Puka proves you dump old possession WRs when you can draft young, cheap guys now. The game is much easier to come in and contribute at WR.

I wonder how long this banter is going to go on in this thread. KA is gone; there's a new regime in town. Does ANYONE think this team didn't need a change at the top? Hard decisions had - and probably still have - to be made. TT and Staley made an actual mess out of this team's roster and salary cap over the past 2-3 years, so something had to be done.

And...I doubt this is the end. MW could be back; we could swing a major trade down in the draft; there are other intriguing FAs still out there.

Hell, it's been a FUN off-season for a change. KA was a great Charger, but he's now a Chicago Bear. Time to move on.

and stop thinking Allen was ever in Rice's class or that Allen is anything but a 2/3 receiver, moves the chains, good in the red zone type receiver these days. He is a very good player - -but time is not on his side.

I'm finding that the pundits are generally puzzled even disapproving of the Keenan trade. But Michael Irvin does a good job of explaining why Harbaugh moved KA, he wants to change the culture and impose his own culture, and that means getting rid of guys who were stalwarts under the new culture.
