Chargers Yesteryear, Memories From The Past

I've always wanted a thread like this, where we could post past Chargers memories. If this isn't worth a thread, please merge into an existing one.

I've been a fan since 1979, and this is the game that made a Chargers fan. I grew up in Nor Cal, in the shadow of San Francisco, and the 49ers were my team as a youth. But the 49ers were really bad in latter half of the '70s, and the franchise seemed hopeless.

In 1978 on my 21st birthday I moved from Lake Tahoe to San Diego, my older sis had lived in San Diego for a couple of years and I had visited her a few times and was intrigued. Back then moving around was easier, you could just pack everything you owned in your car and drive to a new city and find a place to rent, no problem, affordable.

I had not planned on becoming a Chargers fan. But I got caught up in Air Coryell. The Steelers, QB'd by Terry Bradshaw, dominated the NFL in the mid to late 1970s. They were the defending Super Bowl Champs in 1979, having won three of the past five Super Bowls.

The Chargers were an up and coming team. Coryell had taken over the Chargers the previous season and his system elevated Dan Fouts to an elite QB. They barely missed the playoffs in the '78 season. When the '79 season started I still was not planning to be a Chargers fan. But this was the first time I had actually lived in the city where an NFL team played.

The Chargers picked up where they had left off in 1978. They were legit. They played a new brand of football. The NFL had never seen a passing team like this. They were taking the league by storm, changing the game. The San Diego Super Chargers song was playing everywhere.

Then the vaunted Steelers, a team I did not like, the defending Super Bowl champs, came to town late in the '79 season. The Chargers were 9-3 or something like that, and were the underdog to the Steelers at home. But the Chargers smoked the Steelers 35-7 in this game, and I was hooked.

There were 12 turnovers in this game, the Chargers got 8. Linebacker Woody Lowe had two INTs, one returned for a long TD, one of the most exciting defensive plays in Chargers history.

I couldn't figure out where to put this one. It's a hilariously ACCURATE recap of being a Charger fan from January 2023 to this year's draft. Brings back every single memory of the past 19 months.

Don Coryell was it for me. From the time they hired him. He was famous for his Aztec teams, coaches and players. At least in San Diego. That was when I felt that San Diego had an NFL team that represented us. And Wow! Just Wow! were they exciting. I've never gotten over my Chargers since. Even if they moved. Hell, I done that.

Growing up in the Valley, my dad was a Rams fan. We would always watch the Rams play on Sunday. This was the game that made me drop them and become a Chargers fan (I was 9 at the time of this game) the Chargers were my team from then on. Fouts would always be my favorite player as well.

Pretty damn funny indeed, but one thing ill note, for me anyway i never wanted Kellen Moore as our HC after Staley. The thought of that turns my stomach but it was mentioned here by some early on. Maybe that guy reads this forum as well? lol

Best part is about Staley and Testicle being fired. I know Raider fans like to bag on us for that game to try and make us mad but they just dont understand why it actually makes us happy and grateful for that game.

I was a little kid in the 60's and my dad was a season ticket holder at balboa and then Jack Murphy. I used to go to games with him but he took his business partner to a chiefs game instead of me and I remember sitting by the big console listening on the radio when speedy duncan picked off a chiefs pass and returned it 99/100 yards for a TD. I was so mad he didn't take me to that game. Speedy was one of my favorite chargers. I loved Dickie Post, Keith Lincoln, Lance Alworth and almost more than anyone Gary "the ghost" Garrison.

They don't realize that game opened the window to make good things happen for the Chargers, which will ultimately will come back to haunt the Raiders. That said, there are Raiders fans who believe Harbaugh would've chosen to coach the Raiders over any other team but Mark Davis chose Pierce instead.

Neither did I. After talking to enough Cowboys fans (they're all over the place), I had a really bad feeling about Kellen Moore. I wanted Jim Harbaugh as the head coach since the middle of the 2022 season. For once, the Spanos family has finally come through.

I was initially hopeful for Kellen Moore. But it soon became apparent that he wasn't the answer at OC, let alone HC. Halfway through the season I regretted Lombardi being let go.
