Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame

They wanted a new right tackle, yet they used the No. 5 overall pick on a left tackle who has never played right tackle before in his entire football career. Joe Alt is very talented and could succeed at this new position, but this hasn’t been an automatic transition for other players in the past.

Aside from that possible blunder, the Chargers had a strong draft.

Until 2 years ago Alt was playing TE and QB. In 2 years he learned to play LT and was the top tackle picked. I think he makes the switch to RT fine.

Today is a big test for Joe Alt. Coming in, I thought he was a bit overhyped. Former tight end but athletically is he really elite for the position? The 40 time was good but didn’t come close to standing out (5.05/1.73). Obviously, great length being 6-foot-8. Not a good bender. Serious stumbles in the wave. Can’t get his feet under him. Serious slippage. Stuck when he has to change direction. Average foot speed. Not tight in the hips. Can open up that way. I don’t see any kind of elite movement skills. Slow getting off the line turning the corner in the down block. Mirror drill not good. Not light on the feet and keeps slipping sliding into the ground.

I’m thoroughly confused by the Kingsley S ranking. I know I’m not an expert but I saw sooo many flaws with that guy. Sure he is physically gifted, but he straight up misses assignments & was terrible as a run blocker. Soooo far from a finished product.

Thats what I saw...biggest reason I made peace with oline first, playmakers later...the second day tackles are all raw, tool possessing guys who need plenty of work...

He said as a TE, he lined up next to the RT many, many times and had his hand in the dirt as a blocking TE.
He’ll be fine.
