I don’t know I guess I’m just not buying the hype and he fell to the 7th for a reason what that is I don’t know. I’m sure being the son of Jerry Rice can be both a blessing and a curse. We’ll see and I’ve been wrong on most of this stuff since Justin was drafted.
Ya I wonder if that has anything to do around the narrative that Caleb had "nothing to work with"
idk.

With the information that we (don't!) have, Brenden Rice's plummet through the draft makes almost NO sense. Nobody, anywhere, would have been surprised if he had been selected in the 4th round. And yet, every team passed on him multiple times after Round 4 until Joe Hortiz showed mercy in Round 7.
Conversely, a couple of weeks before the draft, Texas DT T'Vondre Sweat got a D.U.I. that everyone was convinced would cost him significantly on draft day. But it DIDN'T! He was selected at a spot consistent with where he had been projected to go BEFORE being cited for drunk driving.
So, basically... I don't get it. Pretty big paradox here. It just feels obvious that there are some important data points that we don't have, because the data points we DO have don't add up to what we got.

WR's in the draft:
7 in round 1
4 in round 2
5 in round 3
4 in round 4
4 in round 5
7 in round 6
4 in round 7 (Rice was the first in round 7)
that is 31 in rounds 1-6 (35 overall). one for each team! Rice might have gotten beat out by the other guys. in contrast, there were 12 tight ends taken in the whole draft (vs 35 WR's).
i don't know if there was some "turn off" that Rice had, or he just got squeezed by the WR competition. he will have his chance on the field to prove his draft position right or wrong.

Yeah there may be some behind the scenes stuff we don't know about.
But guys inexplicably slide every year. All that matters is that Rice proves them wrong.

Tahj Washington, Calebs other reciever went #241 in round 7. He had more yards than Rice but not as many TDs. Biggest difference in those two is size. Washington is only 5'10", 174 lbs, had smallish hands 8 3/8" & ran a 4.58 at his pro day. Caleb had 2 drafted WRs so it isnt like he had nothing to work with. And his RB got drafted in round 4.

Rice can do whatever QJ can do and then some. Rice plays hard and does not shy from contact. Is a better hand catcher ii traffic. Plays to his size and catch radius. Will not shy away from big moments.

31 teams' loss and our gain.
I hope it works out for Rice. He looks good so far. There's a lot of competition for, I think 6 slots.
Palmer, Q, DD, McConkey, Chark leave one slot. Could be Rice but it isn't a gimme.
Looks like most players are buying in to the long voluntary training so that's a plus. The coaches will know a lot more about what they have than is usual.

We went from bare cupboard of WR's to some legit competition. Nice problem to have!!
That said if QJ gets beaten out in competition what happens? drama baby!!!

If he gets beaten out he gets beaten out. His contract is guaranteed for all for years so the Chargers will still be on the hook for $4.75m basically for 2025 and 2026. I just hope we see improvement from QJ. Be nice if Rice or Cornelius also were contributors.

Let them WR's compete through preseason. You better block, run your routes, catch, make plays, compete, finish.
Looks like Ladd is serving notice. He got traded up for by the new regime. He's gonna shine in training camp. He's gonna do the above in preseason.
I tell ya. If Herbert only makes 15 throws in a game. There's going to be 6 regular throws, 4 bombs, and 5 vintage Herbert lasers. The inability to not catch is amplified.

It'll probably be more like 30 passes per game avg for the year. We won't cut back that much.
