I do not get this hurraoptimistic mood we will find same number of starters in a draft as last year. None of GMs in NFL have a consistent record of finding 4-5 starters year in year out.

      yep

Because Hortiz hit on 2 high end starters in rounds 1 and 2 and found 2 promising yet incomplete young CBs in round 5 the standard now assumes that we can find 4-5 starters in every draft and dont need to spend in FA like other teams

Most of the top 20 largest contracts given out this free agency have gone out to teams with QBs on rookie deals. The teams with QBs seem to still be sticking with that "build through the draft" philosophy. Create comp picks. Add in 2nd wave of free agency.

Niners are sitting on (3) 4th round comps right now. Just have to draft well let the players go...get the comps and then hit on them. Replenish the good players lost. And keep the cap hits totally manageable.

I was expecting more movement from us regarding the top IOL guys. But i was also not used to Hortiz's philosophy. We all need time to see how he plans on doing things and 1 offseason was not enough to gauge how he will do things. And we are only in year 2 with major roster turnover. So hes holding out. Gonna add a ton of talent through the draft. And likely use money in that 2nd wave of free agency. When teams drop starters with rookies coming in to take their place.

We are still in that period of building for the future but also trying to win this year. The foundation of any team is built through the draft. He has had one. You still have to get to a point where the house is built through the draft...and then you can throw silly money at free agency to go for broke. We just scored Hart and Still. Need more gems like that. I see this draft as being a major foundation draft. And effort put into acquiring additional picks for this draft. So the plan is to get a really nice influx of JH/JH guys.

I see a lot of comments about this being a "plodding offense." This will be a winning team -- that is the goal. We saw how well this team won with Steichen offenses, Lombardi offenses, and Kellen Moore offenses. I want this team to win. Furthermore, the Chargers -- I have to state the obvious -- don't have some transformative QB. You have a seriously flawed QB with poor footwork, poor accuracy, and who makes mistakes when pressured. You have a QB who still cannot read a defense, make a solid change at the line, and get the team in a positive play. You have a QB who still -- to the best of my knowledge -- needs a center to make line calls because he cannot do it. So a GM building the team to win, the WRs don't matter. What matters are the trenches--the meat. You need a phenomenal OL and you need phenomenal blocking. You need a ball control offense to overcome your QB's shortcomings. That is what Hortiz is doing. This idea that Herbert is the second coming of Brady or Manning and can carry this team is ridiculous. Herbert cannot even carry Rivers' jock at this point (side note -- I think Rivers beats the Texans in that game, but that is another matter). He can win a Super Bowl, just like Trent Dilfer did or even Jalen Hurts did. But it will not be because of his play or WR play. It will be because the team controlled the ball and clock with a OL that mauled teams into submission. That's why this team will never go after the Metcalfs or the Adams WRs of the world. Stated another way, why spend that kind of money when you QB has these kinds of deficiencies? You don't.

Lastly, folks will tell me, "but Harbaugh says this about Herbert and that about Herbert." Yes, he does. That is called coaching. He is hoping that his positivity will result in Herbert elevating himself and his game. Harbaugh knows Herbert's deficiencies. He wants to lessen those deficiencies enough and elevate him enough to win. But Harbaugh, recognizing the nature of the position, is building a team with Hortiz where he isn't going to rely on Herbert elevating his game. After all, Herbert's history at Oregon shows that after his sophomore year, he plateaued. We are seeing that again in the NFL.

            fwiw.

            Slater Zion Zabel Becton Alt

Becton would be a huge signing.

My view is that Hortiz will try to get 5 - 6 potential starters every draft and expect 1- 2 minimum. He will spend in FA carefully so as to have cap room all year for opportunities or needs that will appear.

If that's what they believe about Herbert, they would try to move him, get premium players and picks and get a guy they like better.

Well...my cheat sheet is in the trash...not one guy I wanted is available...guess me and Joe arent soulmates

Bechton some people like...that is a risky signing to me.

Holding out hope Ravens release Andrews...and not even blown out of the water with that idea...but it would be a fair improvement at a position of great need.

Hours of youtube down the drain...doubt we draft anybody I fell in love with....but I was worried the free agency fix of the IOL was a dream...now Im just praying for a draft fix there, lol

My god, you have an axe to grind with Herbert. So far Mahomes has looked Pedestrian in two Superbowls when blocking fails. Herberts blocking has been atrocious for years. Herbert, if released, would have twenty teams knocking on his door for employment. Please stop or maybe you should make this some kind of comedic posting skit. If your not a fan of Herbert you should really find another team to follow.

That’s possible but it’s not at all common.
I attribute last years draft more to Harbaugh and Minter and their intimate knowledge of college players than Hortiz.

I think a Center that can call a defensive is very important here.
They definitely lack in this area.

5-6 starters in every draft is a path to immortality. Those things not happening.
