I don't think Slayton was going to prevent that from happening. Not signing him also takes away the ability to take 1-2 of those positions in the first two rounds of the draft.

At least a lot of the guards are still out there in FA.

That simply didn't happen on the the 510 pass attempts over the course of the year. But it happened too much. The unit needs to improve, the protection calls and the play design. If Pipkins is asked to block one on one 15 times in pass plays and fails 3 times immediate pressure, then the whole play messes up. But that also means he was successful 80% of the time that day. It's just the 3 fails are obvious and remembered. So they have to do both get better play from IOL but also decide how often and against which teams they want to put Pipkins one on one. Plus Texans are trying to get the one on one vs the RG and Will Anderson. It's a favorable matchup for them. I don't want any RG having to block a top 5 edge rusher one on one very often if at all. Chargers decided to try it and it failed. Harbaugh can watch the film and decide how he wants to attack. I think Herbert running could have help. Hit the eject button and counter it with QB run into the open spot Anderson vacates. Herbert and the OC had a bad day vs Texans. it wasn't all OL that day.

I'm confused by this question. There were tons of options available that would have improved the offense from last year.

I think it would have been a good idea to sign several of those options. Many of them are now off the board.

If you watched the Chargers and didn't think the IOL was getting caved in regularly, then I don't think there is anything to discuss. You are watching a very different game than nearly all Chargers fans, the media, and from reports, the coaches.

And pointing out an 80% success rate for Pipkins isn't great. Like Boing 737 Max's have like a 99.99% success rate. That doesn't mean there weren't major design issues. An 80% win rate for an OG is terrible.

So your position is to bring back the same starting o line from last year?

Very puzzling. I get its only day one, but a weak free agent class, is getting quickly picked over.

You have the 2nd most cap space in the NFL, the offense clearly needs improvements from last year to contend....but they are doing little except bargain shop while other teams get agressive to improve.

You cant do it all in the draft and they will likely go trenches

Bargain shopping got them 11 wins with an easy last place schedule sure, not sure it will work with next years schedule

I think Pipkins is the weakest link. My simulator mock has RG drafted Rd2. Pick #55 Tate Ratledge, Georgia.
But I don't make any decisions. I trust Hortiz and Harbaugh.

Is that a hint for the upcoming draft? Our D sucks without Poona clogging up the middle.

Good for Poona though. That’s a life changing paycheck for when he retires.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
                        Let’s win one for Mack.

I agree with Critty! Obviously I was hoping the clear needs would be addressed quickly since we have cap room, however, if you think back to last year alot of impact players were post-draft FA signings/camp cuts/trades so still a lot of offseason left to improve.

Now if we make it through the draft and draft day trades without addressing IOL I'm going to really have to scratch my head.
