I'm not in disagreement with this. But, if we can draft well in the second round again I'm not against this either.Chiefs won the Superbowl with 10 Rookies....

For me, NFL is not the NBA. NBA, one player can make a team. NFL, it really is about the 22 and your entire roster. Get me more good players to build out the depth on the roster. Besides needing a starting OG and Edge 3 - the Chargers need to be thinking about Safety, IDL, LB, another TE, maybe WR, and more depth at OG, Center and OT.
Pipkens, Unc, Perryman, Tomlinson, Dupree one year stop gaps. And I get, the NFL is about one year stop gaps But draft picks are also cheap depth, especially 2nd - 7th rounders, UDFAs. I get Hortiz cannot possibly fill all of this list this year, but.more picks would help the cause. Unless the player you are picking is like top 17 talent, might not be much difference in 22, 26, and 30.

It's a gamble. But I'm no expert. You'd have to really know the personnel involved.Originally posted by gzubeck View Post

Once burnt, twice shy in my case. We walked away from Troy Polamalu for a couple turds on one occasion.

I cannot fathom anyone here who doesn't see that the Chargers need a starting LG.Originally posted by YAC View Post
This is (if memory serves) the second time you've expressed that Penning is a part of the guard competition. I don't see that. I see him as tackle #4 and only emergency guard. Follow the money...he was ultra-cheap...that, and the roster construction.
Strange, meanwhile, I am pretty convinced will start at guard in the coach's plan.
Along with Nutty, I believe the team therefore is still in need of one starting guard, and one backup IOL.
I dont know whether Penning is strictly a back up or competing for starter in the Chargers mind. What i do know is that he played better at guard in NO than he did at tackle where he struggles mightily. You saw him at LT for the Chargers last year. Everyone here was screaming to get him off the field.

New Orleans fans would disagree with you on that one.Originally posted by CanadianBoltFan View Post

I agree, waiting until the 3rd or 4th round is risky when you are in a contending window and need that rookie to start and be effective on day 1 of his NFL career.Originally posted by electricgold View Post
What I'm trying to assimilate is if we can afford to draft an OG in the 3rd or 4th round based on our extreme need for a top notch guard with the abilityto start now, or if it's better to just bite the bullet and draft an OG with our first or 2nd round pick.
I'm thinking we probably need to draft an OG in either the first or 2nd round as opposed to waiting until the 3rd or 4th round.
Kind of why most of us have been disappointed with Hortiz's passive approach to the o line in free agency. Had their already been a startable veteran at LG, there would have been way more flexibility in the draft

I am not sure you could find a worse fit for outside zone than Ben Cleveland if you tried. Can't see him being on the rosterOriginally posted by dmac_bolt View Post
Penning is either starting OG our first OG backup.
Cleveland may not make it out of camp. Taylor and Kalt need to show growth or they could be behind him on the PS.

After the 2026 draft, post June 1 trade offer.
Chargers trade 2027 1st Rd & 2028 2nd Rd and Bud Dupree to Browns for EDGE Myles Garrett. This is basically hand picking your 2027 1st Rd pick one season early and it only cost you a future 2nd to get next year Rd1 talent now.
Garrett Cap Hits next 3 years
2026 is 23.6m
2027 is 28m
2028 is 30m
This already prepares you for Mack replacement. And this is much better use of roster money than giving Oweh 100m.
This is a championship caliber roster move.
Do it Joe Hortiz!
Who has it better than us?

Granted, neither of them make enough to matter either at this point so maybe see what both bring in OTAs and Training camp

Garrett was asking for a trade last year.Originally posted by YAC View Post
Love it! Sadly...Cleveland hangs up the phone.
They need to rebuild their team. They could use draft picks.
Myles is going to waste his next 3-5 years with Browns missing the playoffs. They have finish 3rd or 4th in their division 14 out of last 15 seasons. They will continue to finish 3rd or 4th next few years too. This isn't as bad a deal for them.
Garrett is 30 turning 31 this season. He was drafted in 2017 and is closer to the end than the beginning of his career. Has like 5 years left.
Joe should at least call them and make the offer.
Let it be known publicly he is looking to acquire Myles Garrett.
Then Garrett can hold out and insist he get traded.
Who has it better than us?

Anyone heard that speculation on "Locked on Chargers" Giants and Chargers trade
Perryman +4th for Kayvon Thibodeaux?
That's not bad but creating a LB need.
