So with Lynn, it wasn't just the astronomically absurd ways we found ways to snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, that was a whole team failure, I don’t put that all on Lynn.
the inability to supoort and align with your once in a life time gift from the football gods in Jusin Herbert was just amazingly pathetic also.
All of these are not his worst sins...
for all the (legitimate) crap Staley got for not righting a defense as a defensive guru, at least a defense is complicated and difficult to build, but contrast that to:
a RUNNING GAME. Lynn was a running back coach, saw first hand the Denver ZBS and if all he did was create a dependable run game, with Riversat the helm, that would have been good enough to not be my least favorite HC thus far.
So he couldn't produce a run game and then decides to take the ball AWAY from Ekeler during his breakout year when Gordon decides to be a diva, just to give it RIGHT BACK to Gordon who, drumroll please...
    say it with me now...
    "Fumbles at the goal line!"

That was an epic all time, "I don’t know shit/can't do shit" moment. You can be all the leader you want, but if you have no competency in actual football coaching or strategy, you're just going to lead to failure.
The Norv antithesis, at least with Xs/Os and ni leadership, you can depend on your players to lead themselves and have a fighting chance. We had absolutely no chance with Lynn imho making him the absolute worst Chargers coach since I've been a fan..

      Back to training camp 2024.
The rookies reporting slid under the radar news-wise.
      Vets report Tues 23rd
First practice in pads Mon 29th.
Current Chargers Player discussion and pics should gain some momentum soon.
      One hopes.

We've glossed over the right side of the oline. Yes, Pip has been clearly and repeatedly identified as the weak link.. But surely isn't there concern as to the learning curve of Alt. I have no doubt he has the skill set to be elite

But have you ever driven a car with the steering wheel on the right side or driven on the opposite side of the road? Having done both, it ain't easy. It's counter intuitive and the ergonomics are different. I have confidence Alt will make the transition. But there are gonna be bumps in the road. Opponents will most likely attack him and the whole center to right side of the line. How quickly he adapts has direct bearing on the Chargers success.

Again, I not pessimistic about Alt. Completely on board with his being the Charger's pick. But both Alt and Ladd are going to have growing pains.
I had a right side driving stick shift Morgan in my teens. No problem driving that or switching back and forth to left steering cars. But I was young like Alt is.

Damn. We need a failed HC thread.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
          Let’s win one for Mack.

Marty is a team builder and teacher and Norv inherited that team. Norv never built a good team in his HC career. The Redskins were always meh and the Raiders were always pure shit under him and I believe they hired him shortly after going to a SB.

Jim Harbaugh is a team builder and teacher and we will see the difference from the last 3 suck head coaches.
That Lamborghini had two flat tires in the championship game…LT and Rivers. Norv advanced the team further than Marty, who is revered around here.

Tough choice. They're all failures. I just want to enjoy what we have.
I guess I'd go with McVisor .... if someone pointed a gun at my head.

              The first two years of Norv was like watching a Ferrari driven in first gear most of the time;
The last 3 years were a farce.

2009 was his one good year, and then he blew it with the playoff flameout against a rookie QB.

              Give me McLynn any day.

I think McVisor gets somewhat of a bum rap here.

Unlike the others, there were no absolute humiliations his final season ..... they lost 6 in a row at the end - each game close/some what close.

That's the year were Keenan Allen blew out his knee against KC, game one.

There was also the pallor of the Chargers relocating that hung over them all year

2 hrs of live practice is not 2 hrs or running, hitting, straining for one single player on the field. When is the 1x1 coaching time, the position drills, the … on and on. We can all think of another half dozen adds easy.

they are preparing for 3 hr games, arent they? Maybe there’s 60 min of commercials, idunno.

I don’t blame the coaches. Not sure I blame individual players either. This is a CBA thing 100%, same with the very restricted work in pads and allowed hitting, strict #days for this or that etc. I’m not sure it reduces injury vs increases it later in season personally - I have no data but my spidey senses tingle at the less prep=more injury hypothesis. I could be way off and am welcome to learning I’m wrong, its not personal to me or anything.

I do think this gives the best coaching staffs that run the best camps an advantage, as I noted. Fortunately we now have such a staff.

I've told this story about McCoy a while ago here: The summer before his last year, my wife and I were out to dinner for our anniversary at Pacific Coast Grill in Cardiff and McCoy, his wife and daughter and her friend were sitting at table near us. We ordered our drinks and got up to take a picture in front of the ocean. McCoy's wife was taking pictures of her kids and asked us if we wouldn't mind taking a few of them. We did and I mentioned we recognized her husband and were Charger season ticket holders. She called Mike over and he chatted with us for about 15-20 minutes. He and his wife were genuinely awesome people, asking us questions about our family, where we lived etc. He asked his kids to take pictures of us on my phone and we chatted about the team (he swears he never heard Rivers curse). Our drinks came and we went back to our table, ordered our food and ate. When it came time for the check, I asked the waitress for it, and she told us it was taken care of and pointed at McCoy. We went over and thanked him, and he just smiled and wished us a happy anniversary and thanked us for supporting the team. The tab was for about $275. So, while I wasn't the biggest fan of McCoy the coach after his first year, McCoy the person is all class and I'll always have a soft spot for him.
