Initial 53 | Cuts and Practice Squad Buildout

At first I scoffed at this notion...however...it might come down to guaranteed money some of these later round picks have coming...if its a close call, it may come down to financials...math involved, and my eyes are drooping, but...would we lose money, or save money, cutting these players and paying salaries to undrafted guys or street FAs, plus covering guaranteed money on cut draft picks?

My projection is he’s keeping picks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7. That’s a healthy respectable haul. Hart and Rice go to PS to develop. Maybe CJ too, he flashed the last PS game. Hart may make the roster (heck, maybe Rice too?). Money at the bottom of that list is negligible vs UDFAs, that won’t be a factor. I don’t think bottom round guys have guaranteed anything, haven’t looked it up.

The initial practice squad must be filled by 1 pm (Pacific time) this Wednesday, the day after cuts are due.

Bill Bellichik was on Pat Mcafee show yesterday explaining the nuances of who is cut and later signed to practice squad and it was complicated to say the least.

It’s worth listening to for wonks but in summary, it’s easier to cut and resign some players to practice squad without the risk of them being signed to other teams than other players so don’t freak out on the initial list of who is cut because the team knows they will be able to stash them on the practice squad.

I don't see out the butt measurables on performance metrics, just his physical size - what am I missing? 4.5 40 used to be fine but is slow for a modern corner - though there are 4.5 corners that can play very well. sub-50% in shuttle, 3cone, 10yd. Is this bad data (I don't know)

I think they should "woods" him for this year. Next year is a new day, new chance, new competition, who knows.

I think with the Titans releasing CB Caleb Farley, he could be a good project to try and sign to the PS if he pasts through waivers.

Get him in with the Chargers and working with Ben Herbert this year and next offseason.

He’s extremely talented just a lot of injuries. I’m ok with a 1st round talent flyer on the PS if it’s possible. Fulton might have a little pull in bringing him in.

I see this too. The DL group is thinner in depth, Eb was a higher pick, the big guys are harder to find. He can spell a rep here or there without major defense risk. Hart just didn’t look pro ready quite yet and it’s harder to hide a DB who’s not up to the task. One series with Walton showed how quickly an unprepared DB can cause defensive catastrophe. I think Hart needs time on the PS and I feel fairly secure he’s not a poach target. If he is, thats just how 53’s work out - can’t keep everyone and gotta go with your best.

I saw Jefferson and Woods both outplaying Hart in PS games, if thats the tape we go by, that should be the call. Unless they saw something amazing in practice they didn’t see from those two. Woods has elite speed and now 3 yrs grooming, Jefferson is a savvy experienced vet who showed he can still run with the kids on a field. Both showed a lot of “want it” imo.

Won’t be long till we know now … I do expect a surprise or two I’m wrong on, I just don’t know which …

If Woods turns into something on the outside he'll need to buy Minter a real nice dinner, it seems like the simplified duties of outside corner agree with JT's traits and yes, he has that speed that you can't teach...he also showed more aggression and improved tackling this PS, we already knew he was a ballhawk with ball skills, IDK man, I'm super intrigued by the idea of Woods and Leonard on the outside for years to come, two guys with 4.3 speed and top tier length, PLUS both have improved their tackling by leaps and bounds...I can't believe I'm saying this but I want to see what they can do with Woods going forward, I think Leonard has already made a place for himself on this roster for the foreseable future...
