It's 47-48. You get 48 players on the active roster if you activate 8 offensive line players. 46 was prior to 2020.

Heinicke is about what you expect for a backup QB though. Heinicke has more experience, more wins and a higher QB rating than Billy Volek did when Volek became Rivers' backup. Volek is regarded by many Chargers fans as the franchise's best backup this century.

I remember on the old Chargers.com forum, when Rivers was playing Hero Ball a bunch of us would be chanting "Bring on Billy Volek" Loved that guy.

I don't think TT was restricted from 'churning' - it generally doesn't cost much if you're clever. I just think he was either; complacent, lazy, or incompetent - take your pick. It takes a lot of effort to churn properly, where you actually improve the team - not just make moves to 'make moves', ie; look at me - I'm doing something . . . . . . . . The fact that he chose to roll with Stick for 3 years says it all . . . . . . . . . Or the fact that he hired Staley . . . . . . . . . Or the fact that he never bothered to find a quality backup for Lindsley . . . . . . . . . Or the fact that he built his roster far too top heavy . . . . . . .Or or or or . . . (this could go on fo a while so I'll desist)

other than the few years squeezing the final juices out of 30 + centers for premium pay.

As for drafting actual centers, there was Max Tuerk, the guy who blew out his knee, and David Molk: all 5'11" of him.

My #1 criticism of TT goes all the way back.

After that Indy win, Volek should have started the Championship game. I admire Rivers grit but he shouldn’t have been playing on one leg.

That was a bad coaching decision to let Rivers play. Much like Staley letting Herbert play with broken ribs. I disagree with HC’s that “leave it up to the player”:when they are obviously incapacitated and a detriment to the team and their own health.
