But the genius of Coryell's timing route designs allowed Dan to overcome his very average arm with superior quick decisions and timing synchronization with his receivers to become a HOF QB. Took defenses years to catch up.

Marino ... that would have been redonkulus!
    Billy Ray Smith
    Gil Byrd
    Gary Anderson

Could have had Marino - would have been great

But yes, Fouts was the MFIC!

Dan Fouts was an incredible QB! I know I was there I saw it! His back peddle and accuracy was a thing of beauty to watch.

Dan Fouts will always be my favorite Chargers' quarterback. I'm just disappointed that CBS let him go as a game announcer. I never really understood why.

Not me, I want to see our starters pummel them. That means we took the 5th seed and avoided a trip to Baltimore

                To quote a Raiders fan:

"Harbaugh is going to bitch slap this team as long as he is in this division."

How about this: Our starters pummel the Duhs in the first half, good enough to get way ahead and rest most of the key starters in the second half, except maybe O-line...

Sign him to a massive contract, or let him walk?
Jefferson got his extension last July...they don't need to franchise him, he's under contract until 2028...

i was in Marine Corps boot camp then and they let us go to a game. The Chargers were behind and it was 4th and inches and everybody knows (yawn) you will give it to the fullback who falls forward and converts. Predictable.......Fouts had terrible mobility so you expect the run in that case. Instead he dropped back in the pocket and threw a 15 yard strike to a WR splitting the zone. Talk about having brass balls. Ive been a fan ever since and never regretted it. they made football enjoyable again.

and when teams sacked Fouts, they would dog pile on him and slug him, etc.... like raiders did and were rarely penalized ....got Fouts the reputation and nickname: "Old blood and guts!"... he played with broken nose and a blood covered jersey.... todays players would have been taken out of the game....

Coryell wanted Elway as Fout's eventual replacement and saved up 3 first round picks to use, but Chargers could not make the deal work......sadest part is we could have taken Marino with our 2nd 1st round pick and Marino was basically a younger Fouts with an even stronger arm and even quicker release....... missed opportunities.... lol
I've read that Elway was a big Fouts fan, Fouts was his hero, Elway would've played in San Diego and Acorsi was Baltimore's GM at that time and was negotiating a trade that included Fouts going to Baltimore and one or two of our #1 picks in exchange for us to have the right to take Elway, but neither Fouts nor Elway wanted to be Colts and then the owner got frustrated and made the deal with Denver without consulting his own GM...

The Chargers could've still drafted Fout's successor with no need to make any trades, Marino, Kelly, Eason, and O'Brien were all there for the taking, they passed on all of them and some of them multiple times...
