    Derwin James Has Redeemed Himself

Derwin is (or is close to) the highest paid safety in the NFL. He is finally playing like it. But is it accurate to pigeon-hole him as a safety? He's a LB, a nickel corner, an edge rusher. He does so many things.

He has struggled to make an impact the past few seasons. He got more attention for his bone-headed mistakes than for his play. But he has now emerged in Minter's defense as that player we have been expecting him to be since his 2018 rookie season. Right now he is the best safety in the league. If you can call him a safety.

With Elijah Molden now gone for the season, does that take subtract from Derwin's versatility, will he be needed to play deeper as a DB more often now?

I always thought there was a rush to judgment about him by many here. I never waivered. I even thought many were being fickle.

After last year when Staley had him playing five positions and the green dot and selling popcorn and sodas in the stands and taking tickets before the game

      I knew it was Staley

Coaching matters right? Minter said in a preseason interview they had plans for Derwin and we’re seeing it now and in the last couple games.

He has returned to form. Credit to him and credit to Minter for putting him in the right places to be the impact player he's capable of being. I hope Gilman comes back.

I was thinking the same about Gilman, they need him back for the playoffs with Molden done for the year. Such a shame.

Staley almost destroyed his career. This is what happens when you have a fucking clueless coach. Minter knows how to use players to their strengths and puts them in the best positions to make plays.

To answer the bolded question. Mintor will put someone else in Molden's spot. They moved DJ back to deep safety in the Denver game and the Broncos were running over the Chargers in the 1st half. One of the adjustments was moving DJ back into is natural position and threw another player at the deep safety spot.

If you think Derwin was confused, what about Nasir Adderly?
He quit football after two years of Gus and then Staley. No mas!
Perhaps concussions ... but we'll never know

How many careers has Staley destroyed and is currently destroying on the niners? Their current dbs suddenly forgot how to cover.
The guys a human wrecking ball, sewing chaos and confusion where ever he goes.

Tranquil, the NFL chess champion was confused .... more often than not hitting the wrong gap on run plays (Staley's old bugaboo: football players not playing with proper technique)

Watch live: Chargers HC Brandon Staley ...

I remember getting flack for posting Staley's El Nerdo photos when he was first hired.

That was the big fucking red flag for me with Staley.

He comes in emphasizing how he taylors his defense to the specific abilities of each and every one of his players,
and then starts suggesting he doesn' have good fits for his D.

Big red flag in year 1 that this guy was a blame shifting, inflexible loser.
How unfortunate that they finally decided to be all in and spend through the gills with that clown as head coach.

In some ways I feel as if the Chargers finally redeemed themselves to guys like Derwin, Mack, Bosa by giving them proper coaching. Not once have we heard them asked to be traded. They stayed loyal even while losing badly.

Derwin also got in everyone’s asses during halftime of Denver game and he wants to win. He’s a good Charger that is wrecking shit on the field when we really need it.

As one of the biggest DJ detractors I give him credit for playing up to his pay rate for the last couple of games. I hope he continues his upward trajectory - we NEED him to play big (and smart) . . . . . . . . . . . . .
