Matlock played a little bit of blocking back in college, but he is not really a FB. He played OK, but he has to do a better job of making solid contact. But he had some great blocks this year. he could be better, but he is getting better week after week.
This is not representative at all, but watch 44. He is not in on every good run play Dobbins has, but there were a lot of him sealing the wedge creating/clearing a hole on a lead up the middle. It is really hard to run a gap scheme without a FB, and there are only a couple of FB who are better than Matlock.

Well … perhaps it’s his extensive knee injury history compounded by the fact that he has ‘valgus’ knees, aka knock knees. Granted, it doesn’t necessarily spell doom as there are players that have been fine with such a condition (Quenton Nelson & Pat Mahomes). Honestly, Brock Bowers kinda looks like he has it too. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out so great for RG3.
BUT, not to fear as this is where ol’ Ben Herbert comes in. Pretty sure Joe asked & Ben said, “I got this.” 😎. Maybe even get him to shed a few unnecessary lbs. Also if the relatively cheap & short contract is any indicator, Joe probably already has plans to add more guards as insurance. Probably also why Pip isn’t likely to be moved anytime soon.
Anyways, sorry to be a downer on a Friday. FWIW, I still think it’ll work out. But there might be a few bumps in the road along the way.
And here’s the article. Be warned that it quotes the infamous Dr Chao.

Really puzzled me as well. Moreover, his deal lets them off the hook w/ just a $2.5 mil dead cap hit after year 1. So how in the name of John Wayne’s ass did they pull this off for a veritable elephant that clearly has much more upside than every other overpaid stiff signed in free agency so far??

Secondly, my youngest was born with the kneecap issue that Beckton is alleged to have. One of her kneecaps dislocated during physical activity and basically banged back in place so hard it fractured and tore two tendons. After an MRI we learned that her legs do not have the 'groove' we all have that keeps our kneecaps centered. So both knees were ticking timebombs. The only cure is surgery in which they form a groove and move and reattach the kneecap using cadaver tendons and screws. It is a fairly routine op and my daughter fully recovered in 14 weeks after a ton of PT. Now she is not an NFL athlete which means she will never be under the stress that an NFL player is but she also does not have access to the kinds of resources an NFL player has. If Beckton has this, I am sure he would fail the medicals for a lot of teams and there are no strengthening exercises to fix it. Our surgeon told us this (the exercise not being a real option) right away. But sounds like we are not sure Beckton has it and I am sure the Charger doctors know all about what I wrote and more.Like, how am I a traitor? Your team are traitors.

I just keep thinking about Harris running behind Matlock, Becton and Alt... How'd you like to be on the receiving end of that? LOL. We just may beat some teams up with that combination.

I guess there's always a risk he could pull a Jared Gaithers on us, but it seems like the contract is reasonable so we wouldn't be burned too bad. I understand the hesitation.
I also am confident that Hortiz will bring in some more bodies to compete in case he simply doesn't work out.

Anybody but me worried that Becton, at a whopping 354 lbs, will be injury prone?
I know he’s 6’7’’ but still….thats obese.
I wouldn’t count on him playing 17 games at that weight.
Alt is an inch taller and 322, so Becton is carrying and extra 30 lbs.

I hear you River. But I think Herbert and Harbaugh won't let him or any other player turn into slobs or become more injury prone due to weight and conditioning. It is why I am also not too concerned with a regression by Beckton.
