2025 Draft Depth by Position: Surplus EDGE, WR, OT, RB

FYI Here is my quick study again of how the top 3 rounds could look like based on supply and demand with each column explained below. Note RB are not in surplus (made an error).

Available : I took the top 96 players per CBS rankings big board for the top 3 rounds and summed them for each position. ie there are 19 EDGE in the top 96 players

Need : I took the top 3 needs for each team per Draftek, The Ringer and summed them to get the "Need' total for the position. ie 12 teams have EDGE as a need

Extra: I then subtracted Available- Need to get a view of the depth for each position. ie 7 extra EDGE

In short supply are RB, LB and IOL but we should be able to snag one from the group at #22. We may have to move around to get the others in rnds 2 and 3 . Deep draft for DT as the mocks have shown but many teams need them. Lots of WR, EDGE for maybe the 3rd - mid round value.

There will be more than 4 RBs going in the top 100 picks

I like to see this every year. Thanks.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
      Let’s win one for Mack.

And they only have 1 team needing a RB... gotta be more than that.
I know if Omarion Hampton were there @#22... I'd choose him.

Sorry my bad. Looked at it again and I made some errors in the sort. There are a lot more needing a RB, only 1 team actually needed a S. Please see revised above.

              That makes more sense.

nice analysis. the RB issue is interesting.

at the time, i was surprised that Hortiz made a quick move for Harris (RB) in free agency, when it seemed like we had JK and the draft for the RB room (considering that rookie RB's can make an impact quickly). maybe he was factoring in the low availability in the draft. on a sad note, they also must have known that JK was not a great option, probably due to injury/injuries.

Nice job on matching data to give a bit of insight into how things would be affected by supply vs demand. Makes me think with edge being rich we dont go #1 there unless its a magical player although its a higher position need. DL and CB being the 2 highest demand positions but also high available means we could expect to go there at some point if a run happens on them and we do have strong need for both imo.

if we could add in the team by team needs on this (hey AI…you could do this!) you could have some interesting mocks.

Thurs will be a fun night…too bad we might have to wait 3 hrs till our pick….but lets hope we see that getting worse every year with Harbs driving the ship.

That is exactly right. With a deep EDGE group, you could see some good players slipping into the 3rd and 4th rnd for steal type situations. The war rooms I am sure see this beforehand as they stack their boards , or will certainly notice some great players still available during the daft itself. All the pundits like to list the best still available ongoing in the draft too

There are some obvious needs that teams will address each year like TEN and CLE will very likely take QBs, but after, aside from other teams needing QBs, Day 1 really generally follows BPA. There are other reasons aside from need too - replacing older players, player salary cap issues, players due to become UFA in 2026 etc.

From tracking this closely for many years now, at the end of Day 1 pretty much all of the top 32 prospects are taken so it goes very much BPA, sort of mixed on meeting the top 3 needs or not.

The team needs usually do get addressed at some stage though by draft's end.

Teams went need , BPA or a combo. Only 4 teams took a player outside of the top 32. If they go alternate to D in rnd 2 , there are a ton of EDGE and a few DL. Could be lots of good 2nd rd WR who slip to the 3rd as only 3 of 12 were taken tonite unless there is a run in rnd 2.
