Chargers drafted 4 OL out of 8 draft picks. That was the biggest PON besides Edge and 1st pick was an Edge, so it was 5 out of 8 on PON.

I don’t think there’s a GM that ever existed that was BPA or PON. It’s a Hybrid of both in reality.

Specifically with Omarion, PON was RB, especially in Harbaugh/Gro’s offensive mentality so I think in their mind, Omarion was a hybrid of both PON and BPA.

No such thing as "blind BPA'. The draft team has done a boat load of research on players we'd like to draft. We know about team fit/ needs also.
BPA always fits. No fit? They aren't BPA. C was top PON when Omarion was drafted.

According to you and hindsight Center was top PON when Omarion was drafter. RB could have been Joe’s top PON.

But BPA is the best player available irrespective of position, so its very definition means blind.

Sorry, but when someone says Hortiz drafts BPA, that’s why I disagree with them. Definitions matter.

This last draft had to put the BPA myth to bed forever.

BS! BPA has to be the best player available for the team that draft's him.
Successful GMs don't reach fo PONs. It's always BPA.

Curious which picks you think were not BPA and who BPA was at that selection? Not saying you're wrong.

Its possible Joe sometimes applies more BPA to his pick than he does at other times. Would not surprise me if Mesidor was his BPA. apparently, he got blue tingles up his trousers from Slaughter. I'd ask him if I thought I'd get a straight answer. I don't believe ANY GM slavishly picks BPA at all times, never have and never will.

Omarion could have been both his BPA and his PON - beats me. I didn't see any all-pro in the RB room at the time of draft, I also didn't see much taken right after him I'm pissed he didn't get.

Many PBs were looking at OGs. I was. Membou 4 to NYJ, Booker went 12-Dal, Zabel 18- Sea. Joe took Hampton at 22. Definitely a BPA .

If your board had him top 20-25 then he was a classic BPA.

              Kiper had him at 14.

Of course Kiper had JaMarcus Russell #1 in 2007. He was also high on Leaf…called his attitude an “asset”.

Kiper is not helpful, did you do that on purpose?

OH was in the BPA running when they took him - definitely. your point on any RB in R1 (e.g. value) is more valid than was he BPA or not. jmo.

My question was about this last draft that you commented on proves without a doubt. Mesidor is pretty beastly - his big knock in the draft was age, which is a separate factor than B? I haven't scanned Rd2 picks but I assume I could find other players that were B'er than Slaughter. That looked like PON meets good/not best player to me.

once they are in Rd3 and beyond, its a crapshoot for me- I can't say who should be 87 and who should be 104. Guys with computers get paid to push out their lists, that doesn't make them right (or wrong). Teams lists are almost always different than consensus rank-watchers.

It remains to be seen. IMO Hortiz has been very good with his picks. We're a better team today than when he was hired.
Speaking of Slaughter specifically, he is lauded almost universally for his intelligence, work ethic and refined technique in pass pro, zone blocking in run game. Our draft team liked him a lot. I dunno but am inclined to agree with Chargers draft 'spurts. Looking forward to the seeing is believing part.

I'm a big fan of the Slaughter pick. But I'm also not a purist for BPA - the draft needs to make your team better. I place more weight on positional value in Rd1 and a bit lesser also in Rd2.

I lean toward BPA as I define it. LOL. Best player available that improves the Chargers. It's an arguable definition, granted. Sure as heck not a nation wide consensus of experts.

Hell, scan the list of players taken before OH. There are several players that he was indisputably better than...

Kenneth Grant, Shemar Stewart, Jahdae Brown, and Derrick Harmon were all players I had ranked below OH... and none of them played better than Hampton.
