    Chargers Photos from the 60s

In recent years I've collected a trove of Chargers photos from the 1960s, mostly taken by the Chargers' team photographer (Charles AquaViva). I've started to organize them into a web page. The project is by no means complete; I'll be updating it over the coming months. I regret that chargeroo won't be able to view it, but perhaps some other old-timers will appreciate it. And those who weren't around in the 60s might appreciate a little visual history.

It's called A Slice of AFL History, but really it's almost all about the Chargers in the AFL era: https://ebydurbin.net/aflhistory/. There's lots more to come, so sign up for updates on the web page if you're interested.

          Thank you so much.

I have no memory of this...too young.

          Even Bambi knew...
          no block--no rock.

As repeated many times, my first game at Balboa as a boy was AFLCG December 26, 1965.

I was in the Army at Ft Eustis, Va at that time. My bad that I didn't go to earlier games at Balboa. I came on board with Coryell.
That said, I love the history and regret missing it.

The Misery Index Factor is off the charts.

Few teams/fans...I can only think of Bills & Bengals (expansion team !)...can come close.

I sat with Bambi back in the early 60s if i remember right. attended the practices during preseason time. it was at a place right next to the lake, Sunset park was the name. That was when the players had to have other jobs in the offseason to pay their bills (boy how time has changed). i was friends with two kids that their dad was a Asst LB coachso I was at all practices and stuff.

                  Very nice.

I always liked the pairing with Garrison.

Key block that sprung Lincoln in '64 AFLCG per vids.

I'm just finding this thread. This is great. I am one of the old guys who sat in Balboa stadium in 1961 at the same time as Roo. I was 7 yrs old and Ron Nery (80) DE was my neighbor. I grew up with the Charger players and wife's close friends with my mother. Don Rodgers 52 center broke my Christmas present two years in a row. First one was an airplane that was on a string that you flew. I have a tremendous amount of stories as I in my early 20's took care of several of their pools. Even built a few. Lance Alworths wife Marilyn who died of cancer was my moms best friend.

Thanks for this thread. I will investigate it further.

                    Craig.

That's alot of history caught on film. Cool...my first Charger game I went to was in 1969 against the Oakland raiders at San Diego Stadium. I was 15.

I "remember" I went to 1 game at Balboa, remember sitting in general admission end zone. I suspect I am really misremembering GM endzone cement rows at the SD Stadium though, I was only 9 in 1970 and I think my first game was 1972 so I never could have gone to a Balboa game.

yeah - I didn't go to a Balboa game at all, who am I kidding, I was 6 and nobody took me. I wish I could say I did

This content is EPIC, amazing, much thanks to OP.
